I have just recently build a new computer for the first time with a friends help and after finishing setting up all of the hardware, my friend and I tried booting up the computer and enter the bios to change the default settings to accept a USB to install the software, but after 1 or 2 seconds upon entering bios, the computer completely freezes and stops working, the computer and everything is still running, but the mouse and keyboard stop functioning and the screen freezes. We tried to removing the ram and changing the positions of where they are as well as only using one at a time. We also tried re-adjusting the CPU, but the bios screen still kept freezing after a second upon entering. Because this, I am not able to install an os which I have on a USB, since my mother board's default setting is to read disks, and I can't access the Bios to change it. Please help. This is my first time building a computer and I really want it to be able to run.

Hi and welcome to Seven Forums Javx123.
If you have the USB plugged in, power off remove it. Try booting to BIOS without the USB and see if it works. Power off, plug it into a USB 2.0 port and power on and try now.

Thanks for the reply Britton! unfortunately I've tried that already, and it has failed to make any difference. The screen still freezes a second after I enter bios.

Only two other things I can think of are too carefully go over all the power connectors to make sure all are in place and fully seated. I have forgot to plug in the one for the CPU before. The other thing is the board may be a dud. :(

Yeah, I'm planning on taking everything apart and putting it back together again, but I'm wondering is it common for a new motherboard to be a dud?

No I can't think of anything else. It's not common for a board to be bad when new but it does happen, I've had some myself.

Just a thought.
Have you loaded the drivers and chip set from the CD that came with the motherboard?

OK thank britton. And no, i thought it would be OK to download the drivers of the motherboard from a USB since i haven't bought a optimal drive. My friend converted the files to a USB and that's why we are trying to get into bios, to change it so the motherboard will read and install things from a USB since the default is from a disk.

This is a long shot but it is worth a try.
Power off the PC and disconnect it from the wall outlet.
Disconnect the HDD's SATA Data and Power, try the BIOS again.
Does it still freeze?

I would start checking electrical connections and make sure all are connected, fully seated and none, such as the front panel connections have the polarity reversed. Disconnect everything that is not required for the computer to post. On first post, you should be required to enter bios. No hard drive is necessary, disconnect both connections to it and try with 1 stick of ram, remove the Graphics card if you have on board graphics and use on board graphics. Remove everything that is not required for the computer to POST and get into BIOS. If you can do that, it will tell you a lot of things.

Try with a different mouse and keyboard if you have or can borrow one. As basic ones as possible, some boards have issues with gaming keyboards and gaming mouse. As soon as you enter bios load optimized defaults (typically F5 on Asus boards) as soon as possible. Once you do that, if you can navigate check your Hardware monitor for PSU values for the +12V, +3.3V and +5V. Also check the CPU temp and motherboard temp. You might also check the CPU cooler installation before you try. Make sure it is secure.

If all of that fails. Remove all of the ram and try to boot with no ram installed. It won't boot. You should hear a long serise of beeps. If you do, that is good. It means the motherboard is doing what it is supposed to do.

Try those things and let us know what happens

Yeah I saw that, I figured that is was a mistake and that the OP is attempting to install the OS
from a USB thumbdrive.

Do you have a case speaker connected to the front panel connections? I would try all the suggestions given. If none of them make your computer post, I would RMA it. Does your board have a digital Q code on it that gives error codes? Do you have error leds that show what has failed. Most of the newer Asus boards have one of them or both. If you knew what was causing it not to post, you may be able to fix it. I would try all the suggestions first though. Also, if you can return the board to the retailer for an exchange rather that going through Asus, you will have a much easier and quicker time of replacing it. Take that as the voice of experience. Most retailers allow you to return a defective board within 30 days of purchase.

EDIT: I just re read your post #1. The board is posting, just freezing in bios. Do you know what version of bios is on the board? The freezing once in bios could be most anything causing it, including a corrupted bios. If you have a dual bios, switch to the other chip. How much experience with computers does your friend have?

It seems that the computer just freezes momentarily after booting up, it just so happens that i can get into bios if I press del fast enough. My friend has been working with computers a lot, so he is quite experienced. We switched out the motherboard and tried again with a gigabyte mobo, but the same problem occurs. My friend and I are now leaning towards a bad CPU since its seems to freeze momentarily after boot and not just in bios, and since we switched the mobo already, we think the only problem left is the CPU. What do you guys think?

My personal opinion, it could be a bad CPU, but if it is, that is an extremely unlikely problem. It is quite rare that you get a bad CPU. A bad PSU, Motherboard or ram, yes, it happens quite frequently, but a bad CPU is extremely rare. Start up is an extremely stressful time for a computer. Remember, you are going from off, a complete stop, to full power on every component. That puts stress on every component and a bad or even weak component is going to show up and not work correctly. See if you or your friend can use a multi meter and keep tabs on the PSU, especiallt when under strain. See the values and how much fluctuation there is in it. Swap Graphics cards with your friend and see how his computer does with yours and how your computer does with his. Try a different hard drive, Disconnect all drives except for the new one. See whay happens. I rebuilt my whole computer once because I couldn't get it to post. All the time, it was a bad hard drive that wouldn't allow the computer to start. Try borrowing if possible all components of the computer and testing them one at a time until you find the one causing the problem. If you go through that and still have no resolution, your problem is the motherboard or, as your friend said, the CPU as that's all that's left.
