Solved Newly built PC freezes whenever loading ANY game, Specs included

Hey guys, I just built my first PC and I thought all was fine and dandy until this morning. Modern Warfare 3 on steam finally finished downloading and I pressed the play button. It loads the intro movie just fine, but when it gets to the game's menu my screen freezes and you can hear the music stop playing correctly and stutters. It's the same whenever trying to load any game. I cannot press ctrl+alt+del, or press the windows key. The system freezes completely. Not really sure what's happening.

Here are my specs:

NZXT Phantom Case
Gigabyte 990FXA-UD7 Motherboard
AMD FX-8120 X8 125w AM3+ CPU
Corsair Vengeance 8gb PC 15000 DDR3 1866mhz (2x4gb) Ram
Windows 7 Professional 64bit OS
Dual XFX Radeon HD 6950 2gb DDR5 (CDDC edition) in CrossFireX
and an OCZ ZX Series 1000watt Power Supply that is CrossFireX Compatible.

What I know for sure:
I know that my display driver for the 6950s in CrossFireX is installed correctly. The OS installed flawlessly, and the correct DirectX is installed. The system is connected exactly how it should be according to Gigabyte's instructions in the manual. Also, my Ram is on the QVL for my motherboard.

Any ideas?

Hi and welcome to the forums.


I think the 1st thing I would do is try it with just 1 card in and see if it runs ok.

Then if it does I would test it with the other card in on its own.

That should then rule out a faulty card.

It's always nice when the first suggestion is the right suggestion lol. I tried it with just one on the mobo's pci-e x16_1 slot with both cards and one of them was bad . It was the one that didn't have the monitor hooked in to, and only affected my picture when crossfire kicked in. Thanks for the help paul.

Dual 6950's!? I'm running one and it maxes out any game I try even BF3. Slight over kill!

Considering MW3 is basically a console port.. *sigh* hence I'm avoiding it lol.
