I had problems formatting my new Seagate SSHD. I finally got it formatted and, I thought, successfully cloned my C drive onto the new drive. I installed the new drive and it appeared to open Win7 OK.

As it opened there was a small popup in the lower left that stated a new driver for the new drive was being installed. Seconds later a popup indicated the computer needed to be restarted to make the update complete.

I restarted and the Starting Windows screen opened, then a BSOD flashed for a split second and the computer began a re-restart. Then Starting Windows, then a flash BSOD and another restart.

My Win7 installation/repair disk was unable to effect a repair. I reinserted the original C disk and had trouble opening it too. I did a System Restore to a restore point last week and all seems OK now. I tried to use System Restore on the new SSHD but the cloning process seems not to copy restore points from the original drive.

I guess I'm not following this, since if all was OK, I wouldn't expect a post.

Or do you have a problem of some type?

Or is your post just meant as a comment?

If you do have a problem, what application did you use to clone the old installation?

Do I have a problem?

My newly cloned drive fails to start Win7, flashes a BSOD, and tries to re-start automatically and likely would continue this indefinitely if I didn't shut the computer down.

Would you suggest I re-format the new drive and try to re-clone it?
Application: Acronis.

I don't think you need to format a drive before you do the clone.

But--I'd probably try to make an image of C and restore it, rather than clone C.

Not sure I'd use Acronis, particularly since it's apparently not working as advertised or as you had hoped.

Cloning and imaging both can have problems, so I wouldn't rule out having to do a clean install. You'd have to compare how much trouble that is compared to the trouble-shooting required with cloning or imaging. Would you spend 5, 10, or 20 hours trouble-shooting? At what point would you give up?

Do you have a UEFI BIOS? My Acronis doesn't support it. You need the latest Macrium Reflect or Paragon imaging app to clone or image over.

When a clone or image doesn't boot confirm the correct partition is Partition Marked Active
then run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times.

If that fails try booting the Win7 installer for your licensed version to Clean Install Windows 7. If it fails work through these steps for Overcoming Windows 7 Installation Failures - Windows 7 Help Forums which may reveal the problem to allow the cloning or imaging to proceed, or just do the clean install.

I recloned using different software and all is well now.

Glad to hear you got it working. I just finished a day and a half of trying to get my new Seagate sshd 2tb installed and ran into Windows compatibility issues. It's just not working worth a darn online. Finally gave up and swapped the drives back. I'm sure it's an Acronis "clone drive" issue. If I may ask, what software did you finally use for the clone? I'd really like to get this drive working. I was considering an SSD but don't like using up an hd slot for such little storage and this one is three times bigger than the OED drive.

I have Acronis 2013 and tried using that version of "Clone drive". I checked my latest available BIOS (2010) but it doesn't mention UEFI. I checked American Bios (?) and they don't say. I assume UEFI was later than my BIOS. Maybe I'll upgrade to 2014 and try it. Thanks.
