Networks? ABC, NBC...: That should tell you how much I know about them.

Now that I have two computers, I decided yesterday to take my first small steps into wireless networking through my Linksys WRT54GL router.

I put the antenna onto the new computer, went into the router's software and enabled wireless; I'd been using its wired abilities only for my DSL setup.

The computer's networking quickly found the wireless network, but to my dismay, my DSL setup had disappeared. I shut off the wireless access in the router, rebooted the router, and the wired network reappeared.

I've done some looking on-line, but did not find anything that might clue me into the problem, thus my request here for assistance. I'm not, obviously, in any hurry to get this to work, it is just something that I'd like to try by placing the old computer in another room and seeing if, for example, the wireless signal will go through an adobe wall.

(On another issue, perhaps relevant here in helping me fix the router malady: I have tried twice to change my USER CP details to show my computer set up; when done entering the information, I click on save, the forum software tells me my changes have been saved, but they are not. Thus, my relevant details about the computer, OS, etc., are not shown.)

As I am entirely too well known to be the only sentient being who has the slightest idea as to what I'm mumbling about, I'm going to post a reply to myself:

Having printed out the router's User Guide, which has a small amount of troubleshooting advice, I decided to try again to enable both the wireless and DSL networks.

This time, it worked. Why it worked today, not yesterday, I have now, and likely never well have, any idea. The only thing I noticed during the enabling of wireless and my connecting to it was that yesterday, the router's power lamp flashed constantly, whereas today I did not notice any such gyrations.

Once I had enabled and connected, the Networking icon changed from its usual monitor (or whatever it might be) to a quite different one, showing two connections, wired and otherwise.

I guess I'll try again later, after starting the old computer, once I remember where I put its antenna a few days ago.
