No access to homegroup

Hi,

some days ago I've installed Windows 7 Professional x64 on my notebook. My brother has Windows 7 Home Premium x86. We're both in the same homegroup, have a fixed IP address and no firewall active. But somehow we I can't really get access to the other computer. We both have shared folders and "network recognition" enabled (I translated the German name. Hopefully it is right...or you know what I mean.).

He can see my computer in the explorer under "Home group" but he can't see my shared files. Only when he uses the old network environment explorer he can access to my shared folders.
Anyhow, I can't see his computer in the home group. But I can also access to his files in the network environment.

Before Windows 7 Professional I've also had Home Premium and everything was fine. It was easy to right click on a folder > share with > home group.
So I assume that my sharing options are wrong or something similar.

Hi Martin & welcome to SF

In the ACL of the folder you wish to access. Add NETWORK and give full permissions.
Also make sure that you both have a password set on your accounts.
Make sure that the time is exactly the same on both machines.

that is one option I think. If i gave full permissions to a folder everyone would always get access to it. But I just want to allow access by right click on a folder > share with > home group.

File access in Homegroup and Explorer Menu Bar probs

@Inspire - I had the same problem between desktop and laptop, newly loaded Win 7 on both. Could see the other via Homegroup on each computer; laptop could access libraries/files on desktop, but desktop could not access files on the laptop (on which W7 was installed last). I had originally used the Homegroup password that W7 defaulted to during setup. After trying several different things, I (1) changed the PW for Homegroup on the desktop, then (2) left Homegroup on the laptop and re-joined, using the new PW. It worked. Like you, prior to getting it working, the icons showing up on the desktop for the laptop libraries (which I could not access) were generic icons, now they are the correct ones and I can now access all files and folders on each computer from the other one.

Prior to fixing above, I noticed that the laptop (upgraded from Vista, but did a custom install, desktop upgraded from XP, also custom), Explorer screen (not IExplorer, just Windows Explorer) had no menu bar (file, edit, view, etc.). I researched a little, and from that went to Control Panel/Folder Options/View and checked "Always show menus". It corrected the problem.

I LOVE Windows 7! These are the only 2 "bugs" I've come across so far. I'm a 63 yr-old great grandmother, so if I find it pretty user-friendly, I would think most anyone should. I liked XP and hated Vista, so it is a welcome change to get both computers set up with same O/S.
