No AHCI

On my work PC I've changed the registry setting and rebooted but it didn't install the drivers. In Device Manager there's no AHCI. Can't boot if BIOS is set to AHCI because there is none according to Windows. I've tried everything I can think of.

Any ideas?

Hey Tw33k

Did you follow Bare Foot Kid's tutorial here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/61869-ahci-enable-windows-7-vista.html ?

You have to be sure to do it in the exact order:
Make registry change > restart and go directly into BIOS > change to AHCI > Save and Exit to boot into Windows > Restart after driver install.

Windows 7 included IDE mode and AHCI drivers for my SATA controller (Intel ICH10R, paired with an X58 chipset).

Does Win7 include similar drivers for an AMD 790X chipset?

@Hopalong...It's not for the board in my sig, that's my home pc. The problem is with my PC @ work.

Windows does provide the drivers for my 790X chipset and should for this board (78LMT) but no matter what I do, it doesn't go through the whole "found new hardware" etc. When I set AHCI in the BIOS, it won't boot (get an error saying no bootmgr press ctrl+alt+del)

I thought I'd revisit this thread and just brainstorm the issue- stream of consciousness kind of thing. Maybe something of use will come out! (where I am from we call this "turning over the couch to see if money will fall out".

As givens we can assume that W7 normally includes it's own generic AHCI driver, the motherboard is a Gigabyte MA-78LMT-S2, the hard drive is a AHCI capable SATA drive, and the normal method of switching from IDE mode to AHCI mode after W7 installation was performed correctly and does not work.

So why would that happen?

The W7 AHCI driver file is missing? Maybe if a cleaner program had been used at any time the "unused" AHCI driver may have been deleted. The inf file could be corrupted. I wonder if running SFC would correct that?

The chipset driver from Gigabyte needs to be updated or reinstalled.
The AHCI driver from Gigabyte that is usually installed with F6 at OS install- could the inf file be extracted? Placed in the System32 folder for use when the registry change is done again?

Could there be another setting in the BIOS that enables/disables AHCI capability? I can't remember what the Main Tab of the BIOS looks like before you change to AHCI. Would resetting the BIOS defaults or even doing a CLR CMOS help?

Could the SATA controller on the motherboard be bad? How would you test that?

Let me know what you think and if any of this babbling helped spark an idea.

This is a bit late if you've already installed the OS but I find that setting the BIOS to AHCI initially and then installing the OS along with AHCI/RAID drivers works like a charm and you don't run into issues later should you decide to run in IDE mode than switch back to AHCI.

In short I find it's best to decide on this now before installing the OS.... even if you don't plan on using AHCI or RAID.

Boards I've done this with.... Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5, Intel D975XBX2 (both Vista and Win 7). Can't say how AMD boards work since I don't use AMD.

As to the Windows tweak after the OS install, I haven't had a need to used it so I can't comment on its quirks, if any.
