Hi everybody!

I've just got a new graphic card, MSI nVidia GeForce 8400 GS 1gb, and everytime I try to boot up with the card inserted, then windows freezes @ "Starting Windows" screen...

So when the 8400 GS card is in my pc, then Windows simply wont boot up. I can go to F8 menu, and choose safe mode, but it freezes @ CLASSPNP.sys.

I can boot up @ onboard, and every gfx drivers are deleted (I did not use driversweeper, but i used CCleaner to remove the last .reg files), but it still wont boot up in Windows, when the 8400GS card is in...
Even though i disable the onboard function in BIOS, it still wont boot up with the 8400....

What should I do???

Motherboard: ASUS P5B-VM DO
CPU: Intel Quadcore 2.4 GHz
Earlier GPU: nVidia GeForce 8800 GT 1 gb (deleted all nvidia drivers before inserting the new one)
New GPU: nVidia GeForce 8400 GS 1 gb

The best,

Abw.

when you say 'deleted' drivers... how did you do that? there shouldn't be a need to 'delete', but rather uninstall - the nvidia utilities work just fine. I used 8400 gs for 2 years w/o a hitch. did you check the system error logs? anything there related? if so pls report detail. also I note that this card has been discussed on sevenforums several times on the last couple of years - do a search.

Ccleaner isn't the same as driversweeper so run driversweeper

Hi again.

I DID search around, and found many threads about 8400 GS, but no one seemed to have the exact same problem as me. When the 8400 card is inserted, then it freezes of cause, and when i reboot, then it ask me to start reparation of windows, but it cant complete it, because it freezes. But if i take it out, and use the onboard gfx, then it starts up again with the "start reparation of windows" function, and it restore windows, when its complete - but no information.

I dont get BSOD with this card, it simply just freezes at the loading screen of Windows. I had 8800GT before, which gave me BSOD, and the card was destroyed (capasitors were crashed), so therefore i switched to 8400 GS, but then i cant put it into my motherboard, without it freezes....

About my own research, i also tried to clear cmos several times, and switched back and forward in BIOS functions (PCI/PEG - PEG/PCI , disable onboard, etc), but that didn't help. I UNINSTALLED all drivers, and used CCleaner afterwards, which found some unused drivers if nvidia, which got deleted from there. So im really lost right now :(

To be honest, I really dont know. It might be, but how can I see it?? When i use the 8400 card, i can see the normal startup, but when it comes to the black screen with "Starting Windows..", then it freezes right before the flag should appear....?

Hello,

using a Gigabyte GeForce 8400GS for about 2 years with no problems (Win7 64b).
Last week windows stopped booting, having this black screen problem. Tested with the HDMI and DVI connections.
I'm almost sure that this happened after a windows automatic update.
Safe mode runs ok but windows can't automatically recover :-(
In safe mode I am not able to run automatic update (i think this is a known behavior in 7).
Already download the drivers from gigabyte.com but didn't solve.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Regards

Solved the problem!

Safe Mode-->Device Manager-->Uninstall 8400gs device

Then installed drivers from manufacturer (Gigabyte) and restarted the pc.
Everything ok until automatic update applied the KB2762895.
New restart and the problem came back!!
I repeated all the process and hidded the KB2762895 update.
Some restarts to test and the problem went away.

Regards
