Trying to help a friend with a HP dv2000 Pavilion Lap top running on upgrade from Vista to Win 7 Pro with 4Gb RAM. The machine worked fine since the upgrade (8 months ago), he went to France (2 weeks ago) and went to a free Wifi spot and the bother has occurred since. I think there was a update that was not installed correctly. The machine will boot-up as usual with no problems but as soon as you start any multiple tasks the load icon just spins and explorer becomes non-responsive and will say so, sometimes it will return but the majority of times its a hard-restart to get back to operation again. If you try to shut-down by the normal process it will hang for ages and give you a black screen with the cursor still on-screen and moveable and need a hard restart. I have done a system restore to a date back in August, I have run the sf/ scannow and it reported no problems found, I have run a memory test which it passed, I have run it on safe mode and everything works fine, I am able to carry out one task before freezing happens so I was able to update the anti virus (AVG 9.0) and restart and do a full scan with no infection showing. But I'm unable to do a Windows update from the start menu or the control panel it just freezes and ctrl+alt+del causes black screen with cursor (moveable) flowed by this pop-up.
"The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when CTRL+ALT+DELETE was pressed. If the operating system does not respond, press ESC or restart the computer by using the power switch". Any Ideas ?

Welcome,

Please upload the msinfo32.nfo file. To get this:

  • Click on the Start :orb:
  • Type msinfo32 into the Search programs and files box
  • When it opens, go to File, Save
  • Save as msinfo32.nfo and save in a place you will remember
  • Let it finish the process of gathering and saving the system info
  • Right click the .nfo file, click send to compressed (zipped) folder
  • Upload the .zip file here.

To me the problem is the antivirus installed. There is one dump out of all the dumps that loaded.
Code:
STOP 0x0000000A: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Usual causes: Kernel mode driver, System Service, BIOS, Windows, Virus scanner,
Backup tool, compatibility
BugCheck A, {c0c05480, 0, 1, 82cba4e6}
Probably caused by : memory_corruption ( nt!MiConvertWsleHash+7f )
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a)
PROCESS_NAME: iexplore.exe
Seeing the usual causes for your bug check, it says "Virus scanner". My suggest to you is to uninstall AVG and everything related to it. It's known to cause BSoDs on some systems. Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials instead it's free, light weight and does not cause problems on the Windows 7 OS.
After these changes, run the System File Check up to 3 times again and then run disk check. Do upload the msinfo file here so that we can list some problematic software to you.
Keep us posted, good luck

Thanks Kool for the reply. I have been at all of last night getting the machine to slowly carry out the tasks you asked and eventually I got it done. I have uploaded 2 sfc files 1 was taken before I uninstalled AVG and another "sfc4" is the forth time running the sfc check, I have also included the msinfo file and the latest dump file.
The laptop is now more responsive since removing AVG and running sfc 4 times, but would not yet be back to itself as the scandisc is either closing as soon as I restart or does not start at all. but when it did finally run it showed no faults.

So is there any new BSoD on the system? SFC found and fixed the errors?

No problem.
We'll keep the thread for a week or so before actually calling it solved.
