Solved no gadgets

Twice now, I've restarted and no gadgets. The ones on the desktop don't appear and the right-click-on-desktop lists gadgets, but nothing comes up.

I can fix the problem by restoring a previous version, but I'd like to PREVENT the problem - not just do restores.

Anyone have any solutions?

Solved it. In Control Panel; in Programs and Features; to the left is "Turn Windows Features on or off"
I turned of gadgets (then had to reboot) and turned it on again and there they were.
I still have to see if whatever messed with gadgets before does it again.

Restore Windows gadgets

I mistakenly deleted my clock gadget and to get it back I clicked on "Start" and in the search box I typed "Restore Gadgets" without the quotes and all of my gadgets returned to normal.

cmyint,
That's a lot quicker and easier.
If it happens again, I hope I remember your method!

Hello Newmarket2.

I noticed your thread (next to mine) about the gadgets failing to load at boot. The issues I am having are IDENTICAL to yours.

What solved it for you (Windows Features off, then back on again), solves it for me as well BUT just temporarily, for 1 day maximum. The problem then starts happening once again.

There is absolutely no permanent fix as far as I know/nobody knows what exactly is causing this erratic behavior.

Care to keep me updated if you find any solution that is permanent? Thanks a lot.

Disabled them entirely + Microsoft suggest they pose security risks.

As I posted earlier, I clicked on Start and typed Restore Gadgets and my gadgets reappeared as they should be and I haven't had a problem since.

Well then, my fair man, you should consider yourself lucky. Everything I tried so far only lasted for maximum 2 days (or the equivalent of 3-4 reboots).

Keeping my gadgets disabled for now, as Microsoft branded them as insecure for Windows. I'd rather have a safer OS than some eye candy (that isn't that important or critical for me, anyway - I can check my weather on a website manually).

Good luck and thanks for your answer!

Rebooted today and, once again, gadgets are totally dead.
None appear on boot; gadget command off the desktop is non-responsive; and "restore gadgets" also does nothing (no window appears, no error is displayed, no gadgets.
andreibutilca can you point me to the source of "MS branded them as insecure" so I can read detail? I do love my gadgets and want this problem solved.

Hey,

I am really sorry the problem is back for you. As I posted above, I gave up my gadgets completely, as the hassle of maintaining them to a functioning state was not justified compared to the utility they brought to the table.

Here is the article: Microsoft Security Advisory: Vulnerabilities in Gadgets could allow remote code execution

Good luck and keep me posted if anything changes!
