Most folks ask if the drive shows up in the bios? If it shows up there, you may need to partition it or initialize it.

During the install, try going to drive option to see if it will let you add a partition.

You might also try hitting Shift+F10 to open a command prompt.

Type Diskpart and wait for the utility to open.

Then type the following to see if the drive shows up.

list disk

If you only have one hard drive, it should show up as Disk 0. If it does, we can partition it using Diskpart.

Type exit to leave Diskpart and exit to close the window.

My latest experience was with a WD 1 TB drive I tried to use. Nothing would recognize it, the bios had problems reading it, Windows 7 could not see it, nothing. I just sent it back yesterday so I won't know the exact problem for a while, but it did show an error during the Diagnostic test. This was a brand new drive.

Are you booting the DVD, or installing from Vista?

If you are booting, try instead running from Vista. Try both the Custom install and Upgrade choices.

If you are running DVD in Vista, then try booting with Custom install choice.

If you are using a Sata hard drive - you need to install the correct Sata driver for the embedded sata chipset on your motherboard to enable the system to see your hard drive!

When Windows 7 DVD says press F6 now (to add THIRD PARTY sata/scsi drivers install USB stick or floppy with the correct sata drivers for the chipset on your motherboard. Point it to where the drivers are when it asks you!

Those drivers should be in installer unless a much older IDE chipset is involved.

Even if not in the installer, they are already installed in Vista so installer should see HD from Vista.
