No ide detected

I got the tower built, double checked connections, and it doesn't see any ide devices in bios.

I have a 250 seagate from my old machine as well as the DVD drive. Both worked fine yesterday. Both are ide. The manual says it will allow two ide devices to be hooked to the ide slot.

I have also tried another ide cable.

Any ideas?

Assuming that both the hard drive and DVD drive are IDE and that the new motherboard only has one IDE connector, make sure that the hard drive is jumpered as master and at the end of the cable and the DVD drive as slave and on the middle connector.

Didn't know that would make such a difference. But I'll give that a try.

You can also have the optical drive mastered and try both the slave and cable select jumper setting for the ide hard drive. The cable position shouldn't prevent the hard drive from being recognized by the bios at post.

The thing to check now would be the setting for ide controllers in the bios or simply load the optimized defaults in case the bios is having a problem of it's own. You may want to see if it is set for the Native ide mode and not Raid or AHCI somehow while that wouldn't effect the optical drive.

Board controller or bad ide socket on the board would be the two hardware problems to consider if any besides a bios programming glitch.

It seems to be somewhat reading the DVD. But it always says please insert os disc. I have tried my 64 and my 32 cd and none make it happy. I used the 32 last time on my other machine and worked fine. The 64 disc also booted from my old machine

The hard drive must be the master or it will run slower than it is capable off.
Do as instructed above i.e. the hard drive on the end and jumpered as master and the dvd in the middle and jumpered as slave.
Might be an idea to just hook up the hard drive first and see if it is recognized and then hook up the dvd

beside configuration about the jumper, if it hook. maybe you can do simple trick.
turn off your computer,take up your BIOS battery, and put it down again.
then turn on your computer.that's will automatically run BIOS. and check the information devices.

Thanks stormy. It seems to be loading the os now. Can't believe it was that jumper on my DVD drive and where they are positioned on the cable. Maybe that will be the only problem I run into tonight. Thanks again. Saved me from a all nighter.
