Background: Had upgraded to windows 10. after 4 days ok had sudden power fluctuation, long story is had to do total reformat and reinstall. Have Windows 7 on my main pc now. Am writing this from hubby's winxp which is connected directly to router/modem. My laptop in another room, win 10 can connect to router and internet wirelessly, so there is nothing wrong with router/modem config. What's more, can get into both router admin and internet if I boot to liveubuntu cd on my main pc. But not with Win 7. Updated from Vista which did lots of updates so was working then.

with command prompt, have flushed dns, reset winsock, renewed dns etc etc (as you can see have been Googling) but nothing is working. Would love it if someone can help.

Hi oscer1
no yellow marks in device manager, had checked that before but did it again just now. PC is a Dell that came with XP/Vista so I installed drivers from Dell disk, then updated via windows as I installed each OS. Win 7 was upgrade from XP Pro, used the disk, have not been able to run any updates windows or other with no internet access.

i guess when you say you upgrade from xp you have a windows 7 disk that you installed windows 7 with as their is no upgrade path from xp to win 7. can you post a screen shot of the device manager with the network group expanded.

my blue there, actually upgraded from Vista. Had to activate only W7, others were automatic. Windows install had me remove disk and allow all Vista updates before I could continue.

Attempting to setup new broadband connection brings up error 651.

Device manager image and command prompt printout attached.

thanks for your help, tried this, also did msconfig and turned off start up services. can get into router admin, opening browser brings up Google home page, then went to some of my bookmarks but not going to links from initial page. Start up included my antivirus and anti malware, turning them off is not good. Same services run on computers mentioned in my first post so should not be the problem..
