Solved No Internet Access

Our wired router went out in a storm the other night. We have 3 computers. Mine is Windows Vista, one is Windows 7 HP 32 bit, one is Windows 7 HP 64 bit. Mine is next to the router and modem, so I unhooked the old router and tossed it and hooked directly up to the modem (Motorola SB5101U) to check it. It worked just fine. So for several days, we shared the internet on my computer. Well, yesterday, we bought a new wired router (Netgear GS105).

My Windows Vista computer is connected just fine, but the other 2 Windows 7's show "no internet access". They won't even ping any websites at all.

They are both new and came with Windows 7 already installed. The 64 bit is Alienware (thru Dell) and the other one is a Dell Vostro. I have been researching this problem for two days now. We tried connecting the 32 bit directly to the modem, but still not connecting. I manage to get them somewhat on the network (not fully)

I have tried almost everything I have read on several forums. Can't get them on the internet. This problem is really pissing me off. I was thinking about upgrading to Windows 7 on my computer, but now not so much!

Please help. I know this problem has been addressed before, but nothing is working for me!

Have you gone through the power off/power on procedure?

1. Power everything off
2. Power on the modem, wait till it settles
3. Power on the Router, wait till it settles
4. Power on each computer one at a time, wait till each finishes booting before going on to the next

See what that does for you. This often fixes weird problems like this.

If not, post the output of ipconfig /all from the working Vista computer and one of the failing Win 7 computers as follows:

Click on Start then Run and paste the following into the Run box, exactly as show, including double quotes:

cmd /c "ipconfig /all > postme.txt & ping yahoo.com >> postme.txt & notepad postme.txt & del postme.txt"

and press ENTER.

A file will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the contents here. Close the Notepad window and the file will be deleted and the Command Prompt window will also close.

You probably left the old settings for routing those two computers connection through your Vista computer in place after you added the new router. Make sure that you have removed those settings from the two affected computers and that they are back to automatically obtaining information.

And now for a more detailed post...

Perform a IPCONFIG /ALL on the Vista computer.

What is its IP address?
What is its default gateway and DNS server address?

Now do a IPCONFIG /ALL on both the 7 computers.

What Default gateway and DNS server do they show?

As far as I recall, when enabling connection sharing on a computer, the host computer takes on a server IP like 192.168.1.1 etc

You should make sure that all connection sharing settings are removed from Vista computer. Then make sure that every computer has their NIC settings put to 'obtain automatically.

Ok, I rebooted everything. Didn't work. The default gateway address is empty onth windows 7 computers. The ip address is 169.254.98.195 on the 32 bit and 169.254.143.200 on the 64 bit computer.

If they have no default gateway, then they won't have Internet access. Are the two 7 machines set to obtain settings automatically in their NIC?

Since your Vista computer can connect, look at its default gateway and DNS servers. 169.X.X.X IP addresses usually show when the computer does not obtain any DHCP settings.

So, are the 7 computers set to automatic obtain information? Are their DHCP Client / DNS Client services running?

One option you could try is manually enter the default gateway & DNS address listed on the working Vista machine into the NIC settings of the two 7 machines.

This is from the Windows 7 32 bit computer. IP Routing and Wins Prozy not enabled? How do I go about doing that? I don't really feel comfortable about posting my ipconfig/all from my other computers on a forum.

Oh and yes they are set to optain automatically. I tried putting in the ip info in manually but I got a conflict since it is already on my computer.

Well, that information is needed for troubleshooting purposes. You don't enable those (proxy, routing.)

No default gateway equals no Internet access.

Did you confirm that the DHCP and DNS services are running on the Windows 7 computers?

The ipconfig info on the vista machine be the same as you're seeing on the 7 computers (DNS. default gateway.) As they're connected to the router too.

On one of the Windows 7 computers, right click the network icon in the taskbar and select troubleshoot (or click the Windows 7 orb and type network troubleshoot - then select identify and repair network problems). Run through the troubleshooting steps and see if Windows can repair the connection.

This says the DHCP is enabled. I do not know how to check the DNS Servers. Also I have ran through the troubleshooter many times.

Some modems have to be configured to work with routers. Check to see if your modem is one of them.

So, your networking services are running and everything is set to auto. Your Vista machine is on auto too? but only it picks up the correct settings and connects online.

Manually defining a default gateway should not cause a conflict message, as either the address points to the correct place, or not. Now trying to give two computers a same IP address-- that creates conflicts. Since everything is on auto, those settings should be blank (namely default gateway and DNS.) For testing purposes only, you should go into the settings of one of the Windows; 7 Computer's network card and manually define the default gateway and DNS server-- using the same address(es) seen on your Vista machine. Then try to ping a website.

I still haven't seen your Vista computer's ipconfig info :/

A last resort would be to try system restore the 7 computers to a day before you set up this connection sharing stuff.

Have you looked to see if there is a link light on the Windows 7 PC's NIC?

Yes they are both on. Just did a restore on one, (back to before first router went out) but didn't solve the problem.
