Guess what guys ? I have a new problem ! Imagine that.I've googled for answers and closest I came was the Dell quickset app. But,after downloading 3 versions (the last one actually installed) my problem is not solved. It's a small issue really.But,annoying....

The problem is when I use the keyboard buttons to either raise/lower/mute audio volume levels, the buttons work BUT...no level indicator is being displayed onscreen.Anybody else ever have this problem and how did you solve it ?

This is mommas laptop and any help much appreciated. The laptop is a Dell Latitude E6400.I'll be back in about 30-45 mins.Gotta run to the grocery store for her.

Have you tried this?
Look on the taskbar and see if you have the Dell Quickset icon there. It's in the shape of a blue Q with a yellow tail sticking out of it. Click the icon (on some versions you must right click it) and uncheck 'disable onscreen volume meter.'

If the icon is missing look under Start/All Programs and see if you have the Dell Quickset program. Follow the arrow to the word 'Quickset' and click on it and the 'Q' icon should appear on the taskbar.

Disregard model, quickset is the same for all models.

If the Q icon keeps disappearing check "notifications" Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Notification Area Icons to force it to remain visible.

Anak...no dice.It appears to me that there is no Dell Quickset even installed.Or,I can't find it.In fact, when I went to Dells site,it almost appears that Quickset was never even meant for this model !? I even went into ctrl pnl & looked around for something that I might be able to change & ??? Hmmmmmmm.Anymore suggestions ?

No Quickset icon on taskbar or start menu.I'll be here poking around for maybe another hour for answers if you happen to find anything.Thank you Anak.

Would your Mom's E6400 (E64) be running Vista 32 bit?

Anak...no dice.It appears to me that there is no Dell Quickset even installed.Or,I can't find it.
Try looking for the file name R163012.exe in C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell or C:\Program Files\Dell, if this is the x64 version. You might also try copy/paste R163012.exe into the Start/search box and see what comes up:

In fact, when I went to Dells site,it almost appears that Quickset was never even meant for this model !?
Oh, it was available for the E64 but I'm seeing reviews that it was manufactured in, around, the Summer/Fall of '08?
When a model gets to be older than say 3years, Dell has this habit of "cleaning up" their website sending a user to pages that say:

  • "Invalid or demoted driver"
  • "This product is unavailable. Below we have suggested a comparable system".

IMHO. This has a twofold affect,

  1. It's good for Dell's bottom line especially if you're a die-hard Dell user, If I can't find support for my machine I might as well buy a new one.
  2. But, it makes it harder for a Dell user that likes the way their machine works (Your Mom). If I can't find support for my perfectly good machine I'm just going to try harder to find help for it like your doing right now.
I even went into ctrl pnl & looked around for something that I might be able to change & ??? Hmmmmmmm.Anymore suggestions ?

Well, its a good chance that if you can't find the file, you won't find the program or icon. :(

Suggestions? To paraphrase John Paul Jones; I haven't yet begun to suggest! :)

Getting back to Quickset, Do you know how to enter the BIOS on the E64? Check its version, look for; A03, A05, A09, it may be in the title line or it may be in system information I'm not sure. If its different than those three post back the version.

If you can't find a match try each one of these three, one at a time, right click the file and click "Run as Administrator" Step #8 in the following tutorial. If it doesn't work try installing it in Compatibility Mode for Vista.

Dell QuickSet, v.8.0.11, A03

Dell QuickSet, v.8.2.14, A05

Dell QuickSet, v.8.2.20, A09

Your problem may be deeper, there is a member that works for dell if I can track him down I'll ask if he can stop by for a look.

Hi guitarfiend,

Latitude system doesn't get system with the Quickset software. We have a DELL control point software for these systems which provides better ease of functionality on the system.

You can download the same from the below link:

http://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER43758M/1/APP_WIN_R279622.EXE

Also, you can download all drivers and applications for your system at the below link:

Drivers for Latitude E6400

Please check the same and let us know the results so we can advise you further if required.

Hi Anak,

Unfortunately I don't have the access to a Latitude system currently to test the application for its complete features.

However, Latitudes doesn't come with the Quickset software. Instead it comes with Control Point which provides various features to control various function of the system at one click.

As suggested by maxie user can also download the Enhancement Pack at the below link and let us know the results:

32 bit

64 bit

Hopefully one of the software should be able to resolve the issue of the OP.

Wow !! Thanks everybody for all of your suggestions.I just kind of glanced over them at this point (there were so many). I'll let you all know "what becomes of the baby" once I have time...I WILL say-I HAVE "looked at" the "control point" thing and even downloaded it. After I screwed around with control point for about two hours I gave up & decided to just live with there being no solution for this problem. But,you all have given me more ideas.I gave up on control point because after I downloaded it,it seemed to be a REALLY huge file for just that one function AND I really couldn't quite even figure out how to even turn the damned thing on !!??

Maxie...that is not the problem ! The problem is that when the function keys (volume up/down/mute) on the keyboard are used for audio levels there is no on screen display for the levels.AND-I haven't tried the Dell Feature Enhancement Pack yet.

Hi guitarfiend,

I would like to inform you that control point is complete package software with various different functions also including the volume controls.

As it has not shown you the notifications that you are looking for then I would request to kindly install the enhancement pack shared in the earlier post.

Please check with the enhancement pack installed and let us know the results so we can advise you further if required.
