you said this was a laptop so look on your keyboard for a key with an antenna on it usually in the hotkey row then if you find it look for the Fn function button then press both of those keys down at the same time and watch for your wireless light to come on

i said im on a desktop, and the wireless on my brothers laptop works which is why i was doubting it was a problem with the router

my bad I misunderstood somewhere

anyway check to make sure that windows is set to manage wireless connections, whenever you install wireless cards it seems they all have their own network manager software which usually does nothing but cause trouble, windows does a fine job of managing wireless connections itself

for starters go to programs and features in the control panel and make sure to uninstall any software that you have installed in trying to get the various adapters to work

i think your outer is probably B/G try set the adapter to G mode only if it's set to N only this may be your problem

still no luck, checked the router after i tried on G mode and it says its N anyways

that adapter has a ralink chipset and people all over are reporting the same problem i am working another thread with someone else about this same issue if you have 4 or more gigs of ram try reducing it there seems to be some sort of bug with 7 in regards to ram amount causing weird issues

spent today trying things, lowering to 2gb from 4gb ram didnt help, neither did reformatting and reinstalling windows

is it picking up the SSID from the router you could try rebooting the router internally or power cycle by unplugging same with modem and try again

Can you do a ipconfig /all and paste the result here?

I asume you have no issues with the wireless adapter in Device Manager, and wireless is actually turned on physically and in the BIOS?

i went into the BIOS but couldnt find a wireless option, only found PCI plug and play, and i enabled it, motherboard: Asus P7P55d BIOS version: 0501

Well to me it looks like the wireless adapter is either not enabled (turned ON) or a service has not been started.

Check in Services.msc for WLAN autoconfig. Is this started?
