No network adapters work!!! (argh)

Hello,

I have a Netgear g (the WN111) and have been using it for 3 years, this has worked fine on Windows 7 x64, now I decided it was time for an upgrade to a n adapter, I have bought 2 different adapters since that decision was made, both of them have been x64 compatible however both of them, once plugged in and drivers installed correctly, refuse to work, no network connections are found, windows acknowledged the driver is there if you go to manage network adapters but that is all, on diagnostics it has told me both of them are 'having problems'. I know both of these adapters are functioning correctly because they both worked on the other computer I have which has XP on it.

Can anyone please shed some light on this, why is it so friken difficult to get a n adapter to work on x64 windows 7, I have literally tried everything and no progress whatsoever.

I am on a PC, my specs are as follows: Intel i5 quad core processor 2.67Ghz, 4.0GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 graphics card.

Hi Somanyissues,

What's the Make and Model of the Router where you're trying to connect your N Network Adapter too? Is it an N/B/G technology?

For now, try changing your Network Adapter to an 'N' Mode instead of a Mixed or Auto Mode and see if that helps. You may also try changing it to your router as well.

Are you certain that your router is wireless N capible? If so what make model and version number are we talking about here? Older routers often require a firmware update in order to work with Windows 7.

You will want to use WPA2 security with AES encryption, it's best to use the manual wireless set up in your router for this. When you set up the wireless connection it's best to use the manual wireless connection in Win 7 and designate the settings that you used in your router.

What is the brand name and model number of the adaptors you are trying?

Wireless N works perfectly for me using the Dlink DWA140 adaptor and my Dlink DIR655 router and my Dlink DAP 1522 AP/bridge.

WiFi USB adapter 802.11n, and the second that also does not work is a: TP-Link WN821NC. I do not believe it to be a problem with the router for 2 reasons, one there is another computer in the house with Windows 7 however it is x32 at that connects with a N fine, secondly surely if it was a fault with the router the adapter would still find other router and just not see the G one?

The security on the router at the moment is WPA-PSK, but again I don't think this stems from the router because windows has told me both devices are experiencing problems after the drivers have been installed and it has acknowledged it is connected.

Have you tried changing your wireless network adapter Mode to 'G', since your router 'G' technology also?

Give it a try and see if it helps. If not please let us know and we'll try something else.

Ok so your wondering why your wireless N adaptors will not connect although your router is indeed a wireless G router?

The part in bold is impossible with your wireless G router, you can't have a wireless N connection with a wireless G router. I'm not sure what "other" router are you talking about?

I'm sure your adaptors are wireless G capible but you need to define those settings during set up, you need to use the manual wireless set up in Win 7 to define your security, encrytion, if it's wireless G or not and your SSID and password. But unless you have a wireless N router those new adaptors won't do you much good.

At the very least you will need to update the firmware on the router but that won't turn it into a wireless N router.

One thing for certain is that, if you want wireless N speeds then you need to have a wireless N router.

Let me clarify, there are 3 computers in the house and one G router, 1 computer has XP and a g adapter and connects fine. 1 computer has Windows 7 x32 with a N adapter and connects to the G router fine. My computer is Windows 7 x64 and both aforementioned adapters are reported to be "having problems" but they both work on the other computers.

In that case I'd say that the adaptors aren't compatible or you don't have the correct drivers for those adaptors. Far as I know there is no special requirements for x64 bit Windows 7 and there is no magic button fix for x64 this that I'm aware of. If someone finds that magic button please let me know about it. It could just be a x64 driver problem.

You may need to go to the manufacture's site to get the right drivers. Or perhaps your A/V software or a third party firewall is blocking the connection.

I'm not sure why you felt the need for wireless N adaptors when your router is only wireless G but a router upgrade would really help with the wireless N connections.

We are planning to upgrade the router, secondly would faulty drivers mean it sees the adapter but it cant look for networks and it gets reported for erroring? Both adapter manufactures claimed to have x64 drivers and indeed gave me some to download still no improvement.

It could still be drivers or the router but your router is definately out of date so no reason not to upgrade to a wireless N version. I'm sure everything will work better after that.

If there are many wireless routers in your area it might be worth getting a router that has the 5Ghz and the 2.4Ghz frequency's "dual band". Channel cross over can be a big problem in some area's.

If this problem only occurs on this one machine then resetting winsock or the tcp/ip stack should fix it.

Try running this batch file which will reset winsock, reset the TCP/IP stack and release renew your IP.

You might also have some file corruption or files missing on this particular machine in which case running the sfc /scannow command should fix it. ​
