No plans for Windows 7 SP2

SP, SP, SP...... oh my goodness.

It's simply a delivery mechanism that rolls all the updates since the base RTM or previous SP release into a nice neat package. It's not as though MS is going to stop delivering updates.

I think, but am not certain, MS said the same of XP - and yet..... XP SP3
and perhaps the same for Vista, and yet Vista SP2

So, they have "no plans", and yet....... Win8 isn't getting rave reviews. In my mind, Win8 will suffer the same fate as Vista, for some of the same reasons, and MS will buckle under pressure to package updates into an SP (or 2). The IT folks in the business community will force MS to make their lives easier. The business administrators aren't going to retrain workers to use Win8 - that costs money. Win7 will benefit from Win8 development and there will be service packs - plural.

Anyway, that's how I see the world.

Bill

I don't know about a win7 SP2, but I do know that support for win7 will not end in 2013, Microsoft has a policy that generally it is about 2 years after a version is 2 versions behind it will be supported. So basically win7 will be supported until windows 9 comes out, and is out 18-24 months.

I know most of the businesses I service their computers on refuse to take the plunge into anything but XP Pro, not to mention Microsoft just recently ended XP support, why would they end support for an OS that is years younger than XP who they ended support for this year.

UNIX commands were so much more fun than dos or command.
Layback,

I suspect your proposed finger gesture is rather like what I did decades ago while working with an especially frustrating dialect of UNIX. While trying to remember the exact spelling and sequence of one its over 700 totally incomprehensible command line strings, I became so frustrated that I gave it a very simple command: "Go to Hell!". It politely refused by telling me that "Hell" was not defined. You would likely get a similar response from Windows 8......

Have to say that I will never use Win 8, and will look for a replacement in 2020 when support runs out. Only problem with that is that I will be well into my 70's by then. My Other Half thinks I am senile now, so will probably have me put away by then!

Anyhow, since Windows first appeared on the scene in prehistory, there have been complaints about every single iteration of each succeeding O/S. Check out this Thread, which went to 8 pages I think, after starting in 2010 and absolutely slating Win7: -

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/58106-general-windows-7-complaints.html

I love 7, one big reason being that it took me less time to get to know it than any O/S since 3.1. Another reason, is that I find it instinctive to use. But I can never see me having any sort of working relationship with 8.

On another subject: I am about to begin to put together a Win 98 SE system. I have a MSI 6378 board that has been in my possession for many years, an Athlon 2400+ Cpu, suitable PC133 RAM, DVDROM and CDRW from the right time period, Floppy, NVIDIA TNT2 16MB graphics and an IBM IDE Deskstar 80 GB Hdd. PSU is a choice of 2x 300Watt, whichever fits better. Found a beige case to suit all the other beige bits and I am off!

Please don't doubt my sanity, I get enough of that at home!

Now, if you guys could just open up a Win98 Forum ....

Bertison,

I am well into my 70's - 75 to be specific. My guess is that I too will stay on Windows 7 with our without MS support until I can no longer use a computer. However, I have a rather significant software product dependent upon having an actual Windows Desktop capability. It runs on XP and 7. I have forced it to compile and run on Windows 8 but the process was not pretty, the result was butt ugly, and I am very unhappy with the result.

As a consequence, my concern is not support life, it is how long will Windows 7 be available for purchase by my customers for new systems. As near as I can tell right now, that life is roughly two years. Not quite enough unless I am really lucky and sell out for $40meg or become senile or die before the age of 77.

That is a true statement. Win 7 SP1 came out in 2011 and the previous version Win 7 without SP1 will not be supported after March of 2013.

Extended support for Win7 will end Jan 1, 2020.

Long may SevenForums reign! :geek: We service the best OS ever.

We'll have another surge soon after they decide to give downgrade rights to the new Win8 PC's.

They'll inevitably discover that someone made a mistake putting a touchscreen OS on non-touchscreen PC's! Productive people won't put up with a gimmicky button wall slamming down on their work to do Start button tasks.

Then 7 will get a SP with 8's Explorer improvements, just as Vista got one with 7's developments.

Perhaps they intend to push more users toward Linux.

Not as long as the current crop of MS Muddle Mangers still have their jobs. They intend to cram their demented touch (toy) OS down our throats with an iron fist if necessary. Admit they made a mistake? Never!

It is possible that someone sane will take over and boot them out of the company but not for a few years yet. Hang on. It is going to be a rough ride for everyone.

The market does not allow for that level of incompetence for a company so big without self-correcting. Even Vista corrected itself from a huge bloat-monster most don't even remember as such.

The talent for Win7 saved them then and will carry the day. :geek:

Nobody knows this like we do here in the busiest trenches for Win7.
