Solved No probs with install, just a question re: networking

I use the Network Meter V6.3 gadget on my desktop. I also use Oracle VM VirtualBox. I have an openSUSE box running and downloading updates, but Network Meter shows NO activity on my netcard. Why wouldn't the SUSE traffic show up as network activity on the meter? Does it have something to do with the "bridged adaptor"? Or, is Network Meter only showing the activity that Win7 is responsible for?

This is probably the longest I've ever had a Windows machine run without having to restore it to scratch. I'm used to restoring to "factory" about every 2 yrs. I've run with Win7 since new in 2009 and only recently (Nov, '14) restored to clean up the machine from all my 'xperimenting. LOL!! I may never need another machine.

Upgraded to 10 when it was still free, then installed 2017 update.
I'm looking at your network meter and it is showing 166Kbps download in that screenshot... You might just be connected to a slow server for updates. Does it spike when using other network based things?

If I do something in Windows, it goes up like normal. I was doing a SERIOUS download during that screenshot in SUSE, though, and that's what I'm missing in the meter

No changes to the way the meter moved. It refreshes every second.

There is no difference between idle and when running the update, basically?

There doesn't seem to be any difference before OR during the time that SUSE downloads it's updates. Those spikes that you see in groups of three are normal, idle net pings that I see even when the puter is just sitting.

That SUSE VM is not the only one where I see this. I have a Mandriva install that does the same thing, and my Ubuntu install showed no activity during it's updates, either.

My theory is that Network Meter only sees activity that is generated by Windows, and ignores activity from any of my VMs. One more thing I'm going to try is downloading something while logged in on another profile, then switch to this one while the download continues, to see if Network Meter will only show activity generated on THIS profile, or if it covers Windows completely.

BTW, the "Network" settings of the VMs are either "Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (Bridged adapter, Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller)" or they are "Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (NAT)". Neither setting makes a difference...

Hey folks. I think I have this issue figured out, so I'm marking it solved.

I believe that it shows if I use NAT, the meter in 7 doesn't catch it. But, if I use the Bridged Adapter settings it shows on my meter.

Weird.
