I've recently had my laptop wiped due to a trojan. After I got it back I had multiple crashes due to a bad driver install and I had to have another wipe to fix that as well. Now I'm having an issue to where almost none of my programs that worked flawlessly before the virus will run. For instance, if I double click my WoW launcher I get the loading circle for a second or two and then it just stops trying to open it. I've had this issue with a lot of programs, including: WoW, Chrome, Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Mail, Starcraft and a few others. I've watched the task manager while launching these programs and see that they TRY to launch, but very shortly after they appear(I'm talking one second), another process appears alongside it called "Werfault.exe *32" and then about 3 seconds later, they both just quit. I notice that I can start a couple of them up with extreme perseverance, patience and right-clicking "Run as Administrator" a few times. I would be extremely grateful for any assistance on this matter.

P.S. I run defrags and virus checks regularly, and I've used an online service(Glarysoft) to fix my registries

Its possible the registry cleaning has messed up program installs or the "wipes" may have done it. While OS files can be repaired with sfc scans or a repair install, theres unfortunately no package fix for 3rd party apps. Run a sfc scan 3-4 times to fix corrupted system files.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

if that doesnt help, you can even try a repair install.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

But for individual apps, you need to either fix them or reinstall them.

Also, try running a clean boot procedure to check for bad drivers.

Welcome to SF! DoonTrout

On looking over the "WerFault 32" error you are seeing an old 7 RC problem being solved may be a help for you on that. http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/10695-rc-x64-werfault-exe-errors.html

How To Disable Werfault.exe in Windows is another option to consider as well.

Without seeing any programs loading normally however I suspect you ended up seeing a bad install from the start this time around. Regarding "registry fixes" as often seen advertised that could be another likely cause for the problems you are having.

A good clean install of 7 shouldn't be seeing any problems with every program. Individual programs or games running into problems by themselves usually end up seeing a reinstall if no alternate solution is available. Typically pc games often stall or crash unexpectedly when run constantly.

There are only two reasons for such problem either it can be a virus problem or you need to get driver update.

Guess what's started happening again with nothing out of the ordinary done, no viruses found, and all drivers updated...

I think the thing that makes me angriest about the matter is this: I get that it finds a problem with the program running. I get that it shuts it down. The thing that infuriates me is that it doesn't tell me what the flipping problem is so I can at least TRY to fix it

What program or game is that? Try examing all processes running to see if you are seeing a software conflict of some type.

For pc games the older ATI Catalysts and antivirus programs often played a role in constant stalls and crashes. The advice given would be to temporarily disable those as well as other things prior to any gaming sessions.

What are the full system specs?

Possible problems,, bad Windows install, bad drivers, bad hardware, software conflicts.

Run Hardware Diags such as Windows Memory Diags (let them run for no less than 4 hours) then do the same with Memtest86.

Then run Hard Drive Diags.

For software,
I would start over and install things one at a time, using your system as you would for a bit after each one till you find the culprit.

I also will warn against using any Reg Cleaner of any kind , regardless of perceived issues, on Windows 7 or XP.
They have a tendency to do more harm than good.

Don't forget to include 2000 and Vista. Where the problems are seen with registry cleaners is mainly due to the over use of them. People often get told "you need to get your reg cleaned up... blah blah blah..." and then end up in a worse situation.

Certainly any possible hardware issue can't be overlooked since a clean install of Windows along with the fresh installs of each program usually resolves any persistent software problems when no known clash can be found. Bad ram, a worn hard drive, and another item being high system temps are things to look at as well as a power supply being pulled down if not adequate or faulty.

Well, the programs I've been trying to use include: MSN Essentials 2011, Minecraft, Google Chrome, World of Warcraft, and Starcraft 2. Now these are pretty much the only programs I use on a regular basis. Whenever I do actually manage to get Chrome running the plug-ins constantly crash as well, like Shockwave flash and Java.

For any help it might be here's what I do almost exactly: First I bring up the task manager, as it allows me to monitor my processes and programs. Next I click the program I want to run. Third, I'll watch my task manager and see the program climb up the processes list in therms of memory being used, nearly always chased immediately after by WerFault.exe. After they stop climbing they stay on the list for maybe 2 seconds and then they both just stop and disappear. Like I said in the previous post, if it found a problem and had to shut the program down, that's fine, but I wish it at LEAST told me what the problem was so that I can attempt to correct it.

Until you run the Hardware Diags as outlined above and eliminate that as a possible issue FIRST, I don't think there is much else we can do.

Chasing software issues is not easy, and if they are hardware related, the only real way of finding that out is to run Hardware Diags.

Otherwise you are chasing ghosts.

As far as the three pc games mentioned are you running an ATI driven video card since you still haven't provided any general system information? The latest Catalyst versions tend to have problems with many older game titles as far as direct x issues.

As far as the MS Security Essentials, Chrome, Shockwave, and Java runtime a bad install of Windows would be the main reason for all three to be seeing problems at the same time. And that brings us right back to possible hardware faults, temp issues, and some other hardware even bios settings related cause.

As for memtest there are two sites with one featuring a bootable cd image since most no longer have floppy drives. The 7 dvd's repair tools also include the memtest option while booted live from the dvd.

@Tepid I ran the memory diagnostic tool and it did say that one disk was a little off or something, it then ran a dskchk and rebooted so I can only assumed it fixed it as it didn't really tell me. Still had trouble starting up Chrome once it started back up however :/

@Night Hawk Unfortunately I don't actually know my full system specs aside from the little sticker that says "Intel Core 2 Duo". I'm using a Toshiba Satellite model A505, which I found out from the Toshiba site was actually discontinued about a month after I bought mine, but from what I've heard that's not exactly uncommon. I see that you mentioned temp issues, which actually my boyfriend(He works for his parent's IT company) thought it might be. As for the BIOS, I honestly don't really know what that is :/. Time was I could say I was tech savvy when I could show my folks how to do simple things on our old Win 98, yet now my knowledge seems to be exposed as PAINFULLY lacking haha. Also, as I think I said earlier, when I followed the link provided for the memtest it DID provide an option for a cd image, but even when I clicked that it directed me to my cd burner...

Thank you all for being so patient with me as well as offering so many helpful options. I really do appreciate it

Besides the A505 for the model number is there a user guide onhand? That will show the "Sxxxx" number that follows and find the exact specs at the Toshiba support site.

Since laptops/notebooks typically run warmer due to the confined space and lack of air flow a notebook cooling pad is often sought. That would also account for the indication of higher temps being seen.

Another itme besides faulty ram to consider is simply not having enough memory to start with. I just went through another older Satellite A205 model that came with Vista and only saw a pair of 512mb sodimms. I had to tell the owner that 2gb would solve most of the running slow problems and the 1.6ghz cpu being another factor.

The bottom shelf model in the A500/A505 sub series shows W7 HP 64bit, 4gb of DDR3 1066mhz, 500gb HD, 16" diagonal screen for the A505-S6004 model. Satellite A505-S6004 has the downloads, Support bulletin, specs, and user guide.

Note the memory is typically Samsung lower quality memory to begin with. But that answers the question on how much it came with. If you find either sodimm faulty newegg has some good buys on Kingston or other brands to solve that. Meanwhile you will need to download the iso-zip file for memtest to another machine to prepare the cd. Memtest86.com - Memory Diagnostic
