Solved No rights in Program Files

Hello,

I'm not sure this is the correct section.

My problem is that I can't unpack stuff in my Program Files. It says that I don't have any authorisation, but I am the only user of the computer.
Also, if a game asks if I want to install directX it won't work, because of the same problem. I'll have to click on the .exe file to get it to work.

I can however move files to my Program Files.

Anyone knows what setting I have set wrong.
I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64bi.

Hello Doodgraver,

Nothing is wrong. "Program Files" is a protected system folder.

By default, you cannot save anything to it directly from an external source or ZIP file unless you are doing so from an elevated account like the built-in elevated Administrator account.

Instead, you would need to save or unpack it to one of your user folders (ex: desktop) first, then you would be able to copy or move it into the Programs Files folder and clicking on Continue to approve when prompted by UAC when doing so to allow it.

Elevated (Run as administrator) programs that were allowed by you from the UAC prompt are allowed to save there as well.

Yes I knew that, sorry for not being that clear.
I just want to know how I can change this, because it gets kinda annoying to click on everything "Run in administrator mode".
Especially with installing games, since I think it most of the times asks to run in administrator and then it still won't be able to run DirectX since it's a different program automaticly started by the installer.

You could use the tutorial below to elevate all administrator accounts (including yours) to have the same elevated rights as the built-in Administrator account to no longer have to do so. This would mean no more UAC prompts.

However, everything that runs while you are logged in will also have the same unrestricted elevated rights. This includes anything (ex: malware) that may run in the background without you knowing about it.

Yeah, it's really not worth the extra security risk to save a few more clicks.

When it comes to games I install them into a folder of my choosing located in my user profile. "C:\Users\Logic\Games" That way I no longer have issues with older games saving in their installation directory.
