Solved No Shutdown or Restart on Start button

I just noticed on my Web Server running Windows 7 Pro X64 that the Start button does not have Shutdown or Restart. It was there a few days ago. No Windows Updates other than Microsoft Security Essentials definition updates.



I checked gpedit as follows:

Click Start, Run.
Type gpedit.msc and click OK.
Navigate to the following path:

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar

It is already set to Disabled.

I don't normally apply updates to this computer since it's my Web Server and runs 24/7 but I'm applying 34 updates now, will see what that does to/for me.

Specs:
CPU: Intel Pentium D 945 3.4Ghz
Ram: 5GB DDR2 Dual Channel
HD: 120GB Seagate boot IDE
1.5TB Seagate 7200RPM IDE

Give this a try.

Right tick Start Orb and select Properties.
Go to the top Start Menu

I do believe you will find what you need in there.

No joy. Nothing under Start Menu Properties or Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options (there is no System Settings).

Windows Update and reboot didn't help either.

Might want to try "Not configured" in group policy settings since disabled doesn't work?

There's a workaround, which is to create the shutdown bat file. But I presume u want to have a more permanent solution?

1. open notepad
2. type in "shutdown.exe -p" without quotations
3. save file as shutdown.bat
4. Double click it and it should shut down.
4a. Can change the icon to the shutdown icon for better visuals.

Could you use a restore point back when thing were normal?

I'll try a restore point from a a week or more ago, see if that helps. That will lose the 34 updates I just applied but if it fixes the problem then it's worth it.

Power button is set to Shut down

Gpedit User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar
"Remove and Prevent Access to the Shut Down command"
is actually set to Not configured, not Disabled, I gave the wrong info before.

I do have a Shutdown and a Restart bat file with shortcuts to them on the Desktop for now.

Thanks but I've already checked those (gpedit and regedit).

Tried a System Restore to 8/7 but it didn't help.

This has got to be something I've done but I don't remember doing anything. As I mentioned earlier, this is my Web Server. It runs unattended all the time though I do occasionally connect via Remote Desktop to see how it's running.

I'm stumped for now. It's not a big deal as the Shutdown and Restart batch files do what I need.

LOL, I just noticed that in your first screenshot you were in a Remote Desktop Connection. That would be why you do not have the shutdown options. By default, you would have Disconnect instead.

Here's an older article for XP on this, but still applies to Windows 7. I haven't noticed any group policies that may add the shutdown options for a RDC yet.

I use remote desktop a lot, and shutdown a remote pc by clicking Windows Security, then shutdown button bottom right on next screen. see pic
