Have you gone for any Windows updates? When going for them manually through the Control Panel check the optional updates for hardwares. The driver update for the onboard sound may be among them. Otherwise a trip to the AMD/ATI support site would be another option to identify and install the correct driver set.
Another thing to check is to see if the sound is enabled in the bios setup. Usually most boards will see that enabled by default. But you may still want to check to see if it is.

Hi. What happened was that I didn't install a disk for the motherboard with chip sets and the sound drivers ... :sarc: ... I found the disk and I'm good now. Twice windows tried to install something for ATI but each time failed.

One tip I pass along at times is having updates for various things(video, sound, board) kept in a local folder/sub folders on the main drive or on one of the storage drives in case anything gets knocked out. I can then simply browse to the location to run the installer or go there through the update option in the device mananger to refresh drivers.
If at some I will need a clean install again with everything kept updated I simply install from the location without the need to pull this or that cd out for each item. I archive the different catalyst versions as well even for previous versions as well as keeping updates onhand for older builds. It saves time downloading if someone loses a disk too!
