I recently upgraded from xp to windows 7 and I have searched and searched and tried several drives and even read whatever I could find on the internet about this issue. As soon as I upgrade I cant get any sound at all from my computer. Even if I have headphones plugged in. I have tried to fix this problem for over a week. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I upgrade from xp to windows 7 ultimate

Thanks for the info. Since it is a DELL you should be able to go to the DELL website. Enter your DELL service tag number & then search for the Sound Card: Realtek AC'97 Audio Drivers for your computer :)

I have did this but it did not fix my problem. I have upgrade from a dell dimension 4700 to Windows 7 Ultimate. The sound driver that it came with was soundmax. I installed the RealTeck audio driver but it did not help. I am willing to pay 5.00 USD for someone to just fix this lol. Thanks for helping me it really is appreciated.

I do also have teamviewer if this would help any.

You need to open up device manager and expand the sound icon, and post a snip or picture of it.

What model is your Dell ?

:orb:start>right click computer>properties>device manager it`s in the top left hand corner.

It will look like this.

Hi Maranda,

Dimension 4700 was built with 'AD1989 Integrated Audio'. As this unit is not tested to work with 'Windows 7', you may not be able to find 'Windows 7' compatible device drivers for this system on 'Dell Support Website'.

While researching, I was able to find an audio driver, compatible to 'Windows Vista'. You may try to install it in 'Compatibility Mode' to see if that works for you: Driver Details | Dell United States

I also recommend you to remove the currently installed driver before installing the new one. You may want to refer to the following steps:
- Open 'Device Manager' > 'Sound, Video & Game Controllers' > Right click and uninstall 'Sound device drivers' (If visible) > Follow through with the uninstall process > Restart the system
- 'Download and Extract 'the 'Windows Vista' compatible driver using the link that I've shared above (File: R145551.EXE) > Browse to the folder noted earlier where the software was extracted > Locate the file labeled 'Setup' > Right-click 'Setup', then click 'Properties' > Click the 'Compatibility tab' > Check the box next to 'Run this program in compatibility mode' for: Using the drop down menu select 'Windows Vista' > Click 'Apply', then click 'OK' > Right-click 'Setup', then click 'Run as administrator' > The 'User Account Control' window may appear, if so click 'Yes' to start the installation and follow the prompts that appear to install the driver. You may refer to the following tutorial for more information: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/98073-drivers-install-vista-drivers-windows-7-a.html

Hope this helps. Do reply if you have any further questions. Glad to assist.

I have tried the way above but it still did not work. My bios is a dell dimension 4700 and my operating system is windows 7 ultimate. The only sound card that it will show is the soundmax one but it will not work. Also when I open the device manager it has a yellow icon by the video card but it has no suggested changes for it but the sound card says it is working fine. I am unable to find out what video card it has standard vga graphics adapter version 6.1.7600.16385 but ther ddi verison is listed as unknown and the driver module is listed as unknown. Also when I go to the windows notification center it says there is an available upgrade for my sound card that will fix the bug where I have no sound. I have tried that also but it does nothing even after I uninstalled the driver restarted the computer then installed it and then restarted the computer but still no luck. Any suggestions?

Hi Maranda,

Please share if the driver suggested by 'bobkn' worked for you.
If not, you may also try installing the following driver (Sigmatel R99254 audio driver) to see if that helps: Driver Details | Dell United States

While researching, I came across a similar situation where this driver appears to have fixed the issue; you may want to give it a shot.

For best results, I would delete all audio driver files from the hard drive and try installation again. Please open this location on the 'Hard Drive' c:\Dell\Drivers\R***** and delete any folders whose 'R' names correspond to a 'Sigmatel or Realtek driver'. The Sigmatel folders may have a subfolder named 'WDM'.

The operating system may try to install audio driver with 'already existing files' in the driver folder. That may produce 'error messages' and may block you from manually installing the 'R99254 driver'. After you unpack the files be sure to cancel the installation process. (You may try manual installation in compatibility mode, as suggested in my previous post)

Hope this helps. Do reply with the findings.

I am having a similar issue with an upgrade from XP to 7 Ultimate. My system shows the sound to be working fine, but there is absolutely no sound coming out of, either the speakers, or the headphones.

My computer is a Compaq SR2023WM, with all original hardware. I did an upgrade scan before I did the install, and there was no mention of sound card incompatibility. In fact, every test that I've run, trying to find this issue, has come back negative. Device manager says the sound is kosher, and an attempt to "update" the driver gives me "The best driver..., yada, yada, yada" message.

Is there anything else you need to know about the system to give me any suggestions?
