No sound

After a complete shut down of my computer and then finding all my back up files I now have no sound. I have just added an Alba Wired ergonomic keyboard and all the speaker controls are on.
Could someone please give me a complete guide for idiots to check my sound through to my speakers (headphones aren't working either). I have gone to sounds on the control panel and speakers are showing a green tick is there a way to check from there?
I also have Audacity for an Ion turntable on here.
Please help an idiot?

Thanks for asking but somehow I have blundered my way through and got my sound back. I think when I did a sound check on Audio I checked the USB and it come up all right and I hadn't made my audio default....whatever it's now working and I'm able to listen to the five hours of 1970s vinyl I am trying to clean up for burning. Thanks again
