Have you already gone through the settings in the Control Panel under "Hardware & Sound?" You didn't tell us whether or not your using onboard sound, or a PCI card either. The more information you provide, the easier it will be to troubleshoot.

You can still go into the control panel and look for something obvious. If you make any changes, just write them down. Do you have the latest device drivers for your sound hardware? That would be the first place to start.

would they come in on automatic updates?
Possibly, if there's a driver update available through Microsoft. Check the manufactorer website first.

Okay, then go into Device Manager and lookup "Sound, Video, and Game controlers" to see what website you need to visit for an update check on your sound chipset drivers.

EDIT...You may want to start here: http://www.idt.com/?id=5104

im fairly certain that this isnt a driver issue but a i screwed some settings up issue, it all started when i downloaded a soundmixing program for my band called "audacity" my school uses it so i got it safe, but i couldnt get the microphone stuff to work right (turned out to be a damaged cord)so i messed around to see if i could get it to work, and then i got a whole bunch of issues

Bummer. Then I would go into the control panel, and check out your sound settings. It could be something simple.

Should be....hold on, and let me take a look around.

Yep....go into control panel...."hardware and sound"...."Audio Control Panel (32 Bit)"....."Restore Defaults" tab....then click on the restore defaults radio button. Reboot.
