before i upgraded my pc to windows 7 ultimate X64 i ran the windows 7 compatibility thing and it said everything would run perfectly

now that i have installed it i have no sound.
in XP it had an internal speaker that worked every time it also had back sockets that worked when you put a mic or speaker/earphones in. this is also same for the front speaker and mic socket. now that i have upgraded the only way i can get the sound to work is by using the front sockets. why would it do this and is there an easy way to fix it? :D im not too into those long time consuming jobs but if it will work i will give it a go.

Hi, first of all can you please fill in your System Specs in User CP so we know what hardware we're dealing with.

I would first recommend that you check all your audio hardware drivers are upto date, without knowing exactly what the problem is.

I don't know for certain about that but it's likely to do with generic audio drivers opposed to specific Realtek ones as well as there technically hasn't been a hardware change just an OS change.

For future reference do not rely on Windows Update for drivers especially for this sort of thing. Stuff like cameras and USB pen drives is what it's good at.

Also thanks very much for the rep :) .

Be sure to mark this solved.

From what I have seen that is one of those things that is hit and miss. Can also be due to an incomplete or not fully supported chipset driver (needed so that the rest of the devices can install correctly). Personally I don't like (or trust for that matter) relying on Windows to install drivers (which still come from the device manufacturer, not from Microsoft), as in a lot of cases all you get is the driver; and quite often it isn't a full driver but just enough to make the device function.

In the case of video and sound cards that doesn't help to much when there is usually also a control panel that gets installed for controlling the extra features of the card.

P.S. Now that you have it up and running you can find links and ifo to the latest Realtek driver here,

For the most part, you should upgrade all drivers. The only time you shouldn't upgrade drivers is if they're BETA or non certified. I run a Realtek sound card as well and you shouldn't worry so much about upgrading their drivers as they rarely come out with new features or anything that substantial.

However, you should consider an external sound card if you're looking for greater sound quality. Realtek integrated cards are very popular, but also quite low on sound quality. I noticed a huge change in sound quality when I purchased my Sound Blaster X-FI USB sound card. Here's a link incase you're interested.

Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 | Creative Labs Online Store

You may be able to find it cheaper, just do a google shopping search. I think I bought mine from B&H.

Also, if you list all of your relevant hardware, we can give you a list of the most recent drivers. Otherwise, you can go to your manufacturer's website > support and you should find a list of the drivers your computer requires.
