If this is something that recently happened, use the System Restore and restore the PC back to a date when it did work. Many times System Restore will fix problems such as this.

If the Gateway driver doesn't work.... right click on the MS Speaker Icon, select Playback Devices... make sure "Speakers" is set as the Default Output device... then go to Speakers/Properties, then to the "Enhancements" tab and Disable all sound effects.

Will even the restore fail and the Norton 360 also didn't work !!
But I have a program call Revo Uninstaller Pro an as looking thru the backup manager I notice 25 items were uninstalled within min apart from each other "found that strange"
so I restored each item and every thing work!!!!!
It repaired my Restore Points , Sound , and my Network Connection !!!
