no sound...

just yesterday, my sound worked very well.... now there is absolutely nothing. the speakers are functioning, and so are my headphones, both are off mute and both are plugged in properly. it is my belief that the settings are not right. if i knew a way to make everything back to default settings it would work. any suggestions? please and thank you
