No 'stereo mix' , unable to record using my PC , have tried everything

i want to be able to record audio from my stereo mix, also known as 'what you hear' , since i use my computer to make music..

welp thanks to windows 7 this is no longer possible for me.

I have an integrated soundcard on my gateway gt5012, i believe it is a sigmatel 9200 . I have tried updating drivers, i have tried all the work arounds by using OTHER manufacturer's drivers such as Intel, LG (which was suggested to me on another site , some people claimed to have gotten this to work) , i have done the whole 'show disabled devices' , 'show hidden devices', etc etc in control panel, still no stereo mix, still unable to record sound . I have even run a line from my out-->line in and tried recording .. and even that doesnt work.. but that is probably a different issue..

looks like im going to have to go back to XP, AGAIN ...

oh right and ive also installed an old creative labs soundcard thinking that might work, but windows7 is unable to run the installer.. i have tried running it in compatability mode (all of them) , and none of them have worked. Actually, i have never gotten compatability mode to work with ANY program now that i think about it.

so is there any solution to this , or do i have to do a complete format/reinstall to go back to XP.. where i shouldve stayed to begin with .. god windows 7 is so F'ing frustrating

It's not Windows 7 stopping you from having a "Stereo Mix" option.

I have onboard Realtek and have had "Stereo Mix" since day 1.

It's the manufacturers drivers.

From reading your post I take it you've tried various Sigmatel 9200 drivers for Win_Vista.

ive tried every driver i can find, I was able to record sound from my 'stereo mix' in XP so i dont see why i cant in Windows7 ..

also i just booted my PC in ubuntu and ubuntu immediately see's the other soundcard and has no issues, yet windows7 the 2nd soundcard is not working and will not allow any of the drivers to install (they are old , yes ive run them in compatability mode still wont work)

Vista/Win 7 handles some sound functions differently than XP did, thus the reason the old XP drivers are not compatible or 100% compatible. You are not alone, there are many posts here and other places on the net about not being able to record streaming audio. On the Dell users forum, many that have upgraded from XP with the older audio hardware, have installed a new Vista/Win 7 compatible sound card that has the capability of recording streaming audio, such as a SoundBlaster sound card (SoundBlaster calls it "What you hear").

I also wonder how much of these changes to drivers between xp and win7 are due to the strong anti music piracy lobby in some markets.

The ability that is being removed is the one that would allow you to record streamed music broadcasts in high quality, thus opening up the sound hardware manufacturers to potential legal problems for aiding piracy.

The innocent victims of this are of course the legitimate users of the facility such as start-up musicians.

DRM was more of an issue in Vista and since Win 7 basically is "Vista improved" the audio functions were carried over to Win 7.

There is no incentive for Vendors, in many cases, to issue new drivers for legacy hardware. They are in the business of selling new hardware. They want to sell you a shiny new PC or motherboard.

I agree that the vendors are reticent to issue new drivers as this would reduce their sales opportunities for new hardware.

In this market we are seeing even those manufacturers that issue drivers for win7 certain functions that were provided are now missing.
