It seems that this one may be difficult to sort out hammer777 due to the fact that
there seem to be so many different drivers and programs that these
drivers are configured for (AIM, Skype, IM etc etc) on HP. From what I have seen by looking
around there are many people who have faced the same problem as you.
I will take a guess here and say that you also had Windows Vista on prior to the
installation of Windows XP. As I stated previously, there have been many issues reported in relation
to Webcam software packages in their many forms and the confusion it has
caused amongst users of your model. As an example of this there are problems which occur
if you haven't done the installation of the OS as an upgrade using the HP upgrade guides.
I have asked about Windows Vista as if you have the Vista installation disks or a set of backup disks you have created you may simply be able to try the Vista driver to see if it works and if it doesn,t, you could retry the same driver using compatabilty mode to see if you achieve a result.
The following links may provide you with some information and if you don't have the
Vista drivers, I would suggest that you read as much as possible from these links looking
for any indicators relevant to error messages you have seen and/or how you remember
your webcam used to work prior to the Win 7 installation (ie: Did you open it in Skype, did you
open it in AIM etc etc, did you ever see the device listed in device manager and take note of
what the original software was listed as). The links and the information contained within
them may help to jog your memory and send you in the right direction.

I hope this may be of some assistance but as I said it could be a complicated process in
this situation due to all the different flavours that were used with your machine.
On a final note, if this was me I would be contacting HP support even if my machine
was out of support and ask (kicking and screaming and swearing never to puchase one of their machines again!!) if they could make it easier by supplying a link to the appropriate driver for your model whilst explaining that you have done a clean install of the OS and not an upgrade as most of the options seem to refer to. Maybe they will help you out of goodwill.
Failing that, I would try every possible driver available for that model relating to the original
OS both straight out AND in compatability mode, all the options available for the UPGRADE
(even though you didn't) to Windows 7 and in a final attempt if none of that works I would
be searching for any old generic driver which may get the device working.
