I see reports of various Windows updates from 2013 which are causing various issues with CONSUMER PCs using Windows 7 Home Premium....

Noel:

Could you please post a complete list of the troublesome updates from 2013 which MS and you believe to be causing issues with our PCs? I've seen various articles and mentions of individual updates which are causing problems but no comprehensive complete listing from 2013 which is complete up until August

Thanks.

Generally, all updates can cause problems with a limited number of machines - but there have been a number of updates this year which have been recalled by MS because they affected too many.
This month, the problem seems to mostly surround KB2859537 - at least for home users - and a batch of updates for Server OS's (affecting AD architectures)
All older updates that were recalled have been updated and re-issued.

Far more common in these forums is the problem of machines with underlying file or registry problems which don't come to light until Updates fail for one reason or another.

I just installed all the updates today (18 updates) along with KB2859537 and have notice no issue yet *knock on wood*. I haven't tried launching any games but I have read that KB2859537 causes problems with Rift and Defiance afaik.

As long as it doesn't mess with my BF3 I guess KB2859537 is OK.

I'll just count myself as one of the lucky duckies and report no failures/ errors/ blue screens of death.....,
One mishap but unchecking Silverlight pretty much cured it,
Then did a solo install of the new Silverlight version.
But I suppose there is still four months to get through :)

I'm mostly concerned about making sure that I can install the critical security patches without issue, the rest of the non critical updates can wait for a LOOOONG time as far as I am concerned.

I just installed SP1 on my parents PC and of course the missing updates from May-July 2013 showed up after the install of that service pack.

If anyone else knows of any other official MS security patch updates that have been troublesome from May-July 2013 please post them here.

Thanks.

Well, I turn off automatic updates completely and if there's a big update I usually do a system image before the update.

I've learned to take extreme precaution since the XP days. It's too bad we can't trust security updates like we trust the air we breathe.

Most updates in Windows 7 are trouble-free - I tend to be careful only with .NET updates.
I don't recall the last time I personally had an update problem (outside .NET) that was attributable to MS, rather than the installation.

I've learned to take extreme precaution since the XP days. It's too bad we can't trust security updates like we trust the air we breathe.

Agreed. I have my updates actions set to notify me but let me choose which to download and install. I quit using automatic updates after multiple issues with this in XP.

What is a bit disappointing to me is that even Windows OS systems 7, Vista, and XP, that are almost pristine (like my parents Win 7 is) seem to have occasional issues. I could be more understanding when someone has tons of programs and other applications on their OS or perhaps they have highly modified their OS eg, turning off MS services, ect....

I usually don't bother installing non critical updates, unless I research and find that any of them make a noticeable difference in the quality of performance. Usually I simply download and install the critical security patches, and will limit that to a max of 3-5 at a time. So that if there is a problem I can more easily home in on the offending security update. Then if there is a problem I simply UNinstall the update and reboot the PC to be sure. I have heard from some of the experts here that you should NEVER remove these updates by doing a "system restore" to an earlier date, as that can cause further issues or conflicts within the various registry files.

@noelDP:

When one UNinstalls a potentially troublesome windows security patch, all traces of that update are actually removed correct?......

Unless that specific update states that once the update is installed it cannot be removed.

Another tip I learned here is that when you download .net (especially the .net security patch) updates you should do them separately from any others as well preferably a few at a time or less.

Generally speaking, Windows updates are efficient at removal through the uninstall procedure - assuming that the install was correct in the first place.

Most of the time, if there is any residue, it can be cleaned up using the CheckSUR tool - eventually, as that's only updated every few months with the latest data from the 'Customer feedback' - although it may take some manual manipulation to complete the job fully, using data gleaned from the tool.

Well so far I've been another that's never had problems with Updates, got 3 Windows 7 machines here and 1 Windows 8 and all Updates have installed without issue. I will usually do .net updates on their own but sometimes I forget and they get installed along with the others without any trouble. :)
