I have one item in device manager under Non-Plug and Play drivers that is grayed out and not in use, it is FS_Rec. What is this driver used for and should it be running and what do I have to do if it should? Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

Hi squid , have a look here fs_rec.sys - fs_rec.sys information Do Not use the "fix" on the link on that page but follow the instructions detailed also run the system file checker http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html As i told you before I still think you have a rootkit virus on your PC

I checked my windows system 32 for Fs_Rec and there is none. I did a search and nothing shows up. I just scanned with Malware Bytes, Vipre and Threatfire and nothing showed. What do you recommend to scan with? I thought windows 7 64 bit was immune to rootkits? I'll do the file check? Just did a system file check and it came back with Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations.

The way it looks like is I have no Fs_Rec system on this computer. A search turns up empty. Also scanned with HitMan Pro and it came up clean.For what it's worth I just checked my wifes Windows 7 32 bit SP1 and there is no Fs_Rec sys on it either.

squid13, did you check C:\windows\system32\drivers this is where fs_rec.sys should reside and should be 20kb in size , if at all possible try to extract it off the dvd installation disc and copy it over it's possible it got corrupted somehow

I checked the system 32 drivers and I have a fs_rec.sys there and it's 22.5 kb. The code in properties when you right click that item in plug and play says it's a code 45. When you look up code 45 it says just plug in what you have missing and it will clear. The only thing I have plugged into this computer is a printer, keyboard, mouse and external hard drive. How would you go about replacing that file?

Hi squid, heres a tutorial to show you how to extract the file http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/42776-extract-files-windows-7-installation-dvd.html this is the true size of the fs_rec.sys file fs_rec.sys with your version being 22.5kb in size ,I still suspect adware/spyware involvement somehow

The file type you show is for a 32 bit system, is the 64 bit the same or is it larger. My system is 64 bit. I've did full scans with Malware Bytes, Hitman pro. Threatfire, Avast and Vipre all came up clean. Do you have any others that I might run.

squid ,sorry about that ,here is the 64bit version fs_rec.sys looks as if you are ok with the file size ,I'm getting a little stuck on suggestions for you now as you appear to have followed all the major routes .The only thing I can suggest now is to replace the file and see if that solves your problem you could try Microsoft security essentials http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=e1605e70-9649-4a87-8532-33d813687a7f run a scan with this

I also ran Prevx 3.0 and it's clean so I'm just going to let it ride for awhile. The computer is running great.

OK squid if your happy enough with that It's alright and the PC is running great ,But if you do run into probs try reinstalling the file first and take it from there
