Non-repeatable BSOD with two different HDDs, mulitiple codes

Hi everyone, having some really frustrating problems I've been trying to fix myself, but nothing's helped yet. Hopefully you guys can help by analyzing my BSOD dumps.

My computer just likes to crash. I haven't run into any way to repeat any of these, and there's no common factors. This has been happening for months, and I've been able to stand it until now. I'm just sick of never having a working computer. Hundreds of blue screens, at least 6 different error codes over the last 6 months. I've attached the latest few.

The last problem I had with this computer was a rash of BSODs every few minutes, rendering my computer completely inoperable. It was bad caps on an old motherboard, which forced me to upgrade my mobo, CPU and RAM; that was done Sep 23 last year. I've still been getting a few lately, so I tried switching to an older hard drive I have on hand, which helped some, but didn't solve the problem completely. Here's the specs as of now.


Win 7 64 bit
Brand new case with two big fans to hopefully rule out overheating
Gigabyte GA-880GA-UD3H
AMD 955
Sector 5 DDR3 8GB
Rebranded MSI Nvidia 9500 GT
Secondhand PSU, 480W or 550W, don't remember which (suspected cause)
Drives:
Western Digital 40gig IDE (current boot drive )
Secondhand Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB SATA (problem child)
Generic IDE DVD R/RW


Yes, I know, it's weird mixup of parts that could run a lot better with newer hardware. That's what happens when you take what you can get and spend money only when you have to. I don't have money to throw at this stupid thing, money is in short supply. So don't just say, "buy a brand new this, that and the other and your troubles will be over," unless that is the ONLY option to fix this. I simply can't afford it.

So without further ado, I present the error files. Please help me on this one. I'm about to just use this computer for target practice.

EDIT TO ADD:

A short list of codes and associated files I've gotten in the last couple BSODs, just for quick review and in no specific order:

50, ntfs.sys
3B, ntfs.sys
D1, ndis.sys
3B, tcpip.sys

Because of the ntfs.sys being a common factor, I suspect the hard drives, but I'm also wondering if it's not something else, because this happens with two different drives, one IDE, the other SATA.

Also, the errors below are from both drives, both with Win 7 installed. The perfmon was run on the IDE drive, as the SATA drive is too unstable to run reliably for 30 minutes.

We will start with the common problems first (see bold possible causes). Do the following steps and test after each to see if stability increases (the memory tests you can run concurrently as they will not increase stability unless you are forced to move modules around). Post back your results after each step, and if you get a blue screen crash, upload the files again and await further instructions after we are able to analyze the crash.

• If you are overclocking anything, please stop.
  
  
  
• Use the AVAST uninstall utility and replace with Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows to run with Windows firewall. Let us know if stability improves, otherwise continue to the next step.
  
  
  
• Run the boot version of Memtest86+ paying close attention to Parts 2 and 3 of the tutorial. Also, in case Memtest86+ misses anything and comes up with no errors, run the extended version of the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool for at least five passes. These you may want to run overnight since they take a long time to complete (run them an hour before bed each of the next two nights and check before going to sleep that they are still running).
  
  
  
• Run Disk Check with both boxes checked for all HDDs and with Automatically fix file system errors checked for all SSDs. Post back your logs for the checks after finding them using http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/96938-check-disk-chkdsk-read-event-viewer-log.html Let us know if stability improves, otherwise continue to the next step.
  
  
  
• Run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html up to three times to fix all errors. Post back if it continues to show errors after the third run or if the first run comes back with no integrity violations. • An underlying driver may be incompatible\conflicting with your system. Run Driver Verifier to find any issues. To run Driver Verifier, do the following:
  
  a. Backup your system and user files
  b. Create a system restore point
  c. If you do not have a Windows 7 DVD, Create a system repair disc
  d. Run Driver Verifier
  
  If Windows cannot start in normal mode with driver verifier running, start in safe mode. If it cannot start in safe mode or normal mode, restore the system restore point using http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html OPTION TWO.

  If you are unable to start Windows with all drivers being verified or if the blue screen crashes fail to create .dmp files, run them in groups of 5 or 10 until you find a group that causes blue screen crashes and stores the blue screen .dmp files.​

First, thanks for the help.

I'm not overclocking anything, and never have.

1. Avast has been present from the beginning, it's one of the first things I install. Uninstalling Avast didn't help at all, still having serious issues.
2. I'm having a miserable time getting memtest86+ to boot off a USB drive, and I don't have any blank CDs. I'll use the Windows utility tonight.
3. I was running disk check when the computer BSODed on my again. That was weird, because normally if it doesn't BSOD within the first 30 minutes of it running, it will run indefinitely. This happened right after I started SFC. This was especially weird because I was running the checker on an external USB HDD.
4. SFC was interrupted the first time almost immediately by a blue screen while I was running the disk checker. I ran it again just now and it came up with errors, but couldn't fix all of them. I've attached the log file, for what it's worth.
5. I've yet to run the stress tests and verifier, but I have run the driver verifier in the recent past with no problems. I'll run it again, just because.


I can post another zip with the dumps and perfmon, if you want. I've had at least 11 BSODs since I posted this.

The disk check and system file check should be run separately. I have updated my original post to reflect this and make the steps a little clearer. I also updated the hardware stress test prime95 with better troubleshooting information.

We would prefer that you run memtest86+ since it does a more thorough test of the memory than windows memory diagnostic. It is good to run both so that more tests are done on the memory. Also, memtest86+ may need to be run more than once to find errors. If you need help getting memtest86+ to run from USB, try the following method:

1. Download the memtest86+ iso file
2. Download Gentoo Linux Bootable USB Maker. (it will say Kaspersky, but it is just the Gentoo Linux Bootable USB Maker).
3. Unzip Gentoo.
4. Put the memtest86+ iso file in the folder with fixgt2.bat
5. Double click fixgt2.bat
6. Enter the drive letter of your USB drive (Careful that you get the drive letter correct since this will format the drive and you will lose all data)
7. Follow the instructions given by the batch file and you should be able to create a bootable USB with memtest86+ on it.

I really need to know if we can rule out this being a hard drive issue. I have a HDD I bought, thinking that was the solution, and I need to return it in the next few days or else I won't be able to return the drive.

I've never used any automated performance-enhancer type programs at all. The closest thing to that would be an occasional CCleaner cleaning/registry fix. FWIW, I seriously doubt that being the problem, especially considering a fresh install of Windows on my SATA HDD exhibited the exact same symptoms as this install on this HDD, and the SATA install didn't have CCleaner installed yet. But, I could always be wrong.

Okay, I've run the system file checker 3 times now, and included the log file. It's telling me there are some corrupt system files, but it can't fix them.

I've also run the pre-boot disk checker on both harddrives. I have a USB external HDD, but it's only used for music and games. If that should be checked, let me know. The logs are in Logs.zip.

Memtest86+ USB is created, I'll run that once tonight. I already ran the most intensive Windows memory test overnight, and it ran for 21 passes with no errors.

I also included the latest crash dumps in Windows_NT6_BSOD_jcgriff2.zip.

Hope this helps narrow it down. I'm off to run stress tests.

It is going to be difficult to determine whether your hard drive is at fault unless these errors keep popping up. Have you run any hard disk diagnostics on the drive from the drive manufacturer?

If you want to speed up the hard drive debugging process, please fill out your system specs using step 5 of http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html and steps 1-4 to find the information.

I'm not sure if you noticed, but those are two different hard drives. The first log you copied is for the C: drive, a 40gig Western Digital IDE drive. That's my boot drive, because the second drive isn't stable enough. The second drive(F: ) is a 2TB SATA Seagate drive. I can run the check on the C: drive again if you want.

I ran a Seagate utility on the SATA drive a while ago that said it was okay. I haven't run anything on this(IDE) drive, but it will actually boot and stay up, unlike the SATA drive. Should I run a diagnostics program on the IDE drive?

The 2 TB SATA drive came back clean. I am surprised it is causing you problems if it comes up clean in Windows and with the diagnostics. Is it possible your installation DVD is corrupt? Did you do a clean install on the 40 GB drive?

I'm feeling rather silly now.. it's very possible it could be the installation disk. I haven't done a clean install on the 40gig because I need to back it up first, and I need a computer for school, with all of my stuff on it. The odd thing is that the 40 gig usually works, but when I got the 2TB, I used Seagate's disc wizard utility to copy the drive over. To my mind, they should both work about the same, but the SATA was crashing all the time, whereas the IDE ran (mostly)fine.

When you are able to, you will want to do a clean install and see if sfc /scannow still has errors. If you get errors right off the bat, chances are good that it is the install disc. You will want to make sure there are no problems with the hard disk first (before installing) by running a disk check, but if it comes back with Windows has checked the file system and found no problems, the install should go smoothly unless the install disc is bad.

Also, I wanted to clear up the CCleaner use for registry cleaning; for future reference...

Many of us on the forums actually do not recommend automated optimization tools for Windows 7. Windows 7 does a much better job of handling its own optimization than its predecessors did. We especially do not recommend registry cleaning as an "optimization" step because automated registry cleaning causes more harm to the registry than it actually repairs.

Clean install from a brand new installation disc... and it's still having problems. And again, if I just leave it running 24/7, it works great. It's been running 24 hours a day (sleep mode disabled) for the last week, and blue screens. But if I were to shut it down every night, it'd probably start acting up again..

So now what?

Edit to add: just ran sfc /scannow, and it didn't come up with any errors.

Cold boot problems usually indicate memory, motherboard, PSU, or CPU errors (in that order). Did you run Memtest86+ to diagnose memory errors?
