I just upgraded my computer from xp to windows 7 home premium and have no sound. When you look in the device manager it says the sound is working fine but it isn't. I have a Gigabyte GA-81945PLGE Motherboard and 6 channel AC97 Audio. When you try and play anything it shows that it is playing but is very silent. :(

1.Check the BIOS if the sound device is enabled.

2.Check the volume icon on the side panel of the Taskbar to see if the sound is muted or adjusted very low.

3.Install the right drivers for your onboard audio.

4.Check if your headset/speakers are properly connected. Check if their volume controls are adjusted to maximum as well.

I have a slightly different problem in that I have sound in the control panel under hardware and sound, but when I play any file type (FLAC, .mkv, .iso) I get no sound?. I have recently installed Shark's Codec packs (32 & 64 bit) and configured both for audio pass through (connected via HDMI) but still nothing.

I have checked the drivers for Nvidia and all appear to work ok (hence why when I test speakers in the control panel all work).

Hope you can help

I have now solved the problem with my sound, woo hoo! Downloaded the new driver and installed it, right clicked on the speaker on the task bar and clicked on volume control and it automatically installed the speakers and now it all works perfectly. Thanks for your help.

Simple fix for mine, was just to simply uninstall codecs and then reinstall in the correct order!!!

First time on the forum. I'm very frustrated. Bot a new system from Dell in Oct. '10. It is a Studio XPS 7100 running Win7 Ultimate 64bit. Has 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM @1333MHz, 1TB - 7200RPM, SATA 3.0Gb/x, 16MB cache, AMD Phenom II X61035AT + Radeon HD 5450 1GB, 24.0" Dell ST2410 HD Monitor, Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio and Bose Companion 5 Multimedia Speaker System. Speakers were awesome for ~6 weeks. Then no sound. A former MS tech fiddled with the system and somehow got them working again: he doesn't know what he did to make them work. They worked for another 3-4 weeks and have now quit permanently. I've been on with Dell tech support and Advanced Support, and they say it's not Dell, it's Bose's problem. They say it's the Bose drivers that need to be updated. But they aren't covered under my H/W warranty and Bose won't touch the problem since the system is more than 30 days old. Both Dell tech and I have made sure every possible "on" switch for speakers is on to no avail. Do I really need new drivers at $130????? Why would the original drivers have quit working? My only addition is WebRoot AntiVirus, installed immediately after I bot this system in Oct. '10. Might that be the problem? I've turned off WebRoot and still don't get sound. I must plug in my earphones to the jack on front of the tower to get sound. Any suggestions? Thanks.
