Norton 360 v5

I know Norton 360 can perform maintenance and has a back up utility but SECURITY WISE what is the difference between Norton Internet Security and Norton 360?

There is no difference between Norton Internet Security and Norton 360 security wise. Norton 360 is just like Norton Internet Security, it only has more features like Backup and Performance/Optimization Tools. Why would an antivirus software vendor treat their software unfairly/unequally?

I'm using N360 v5 right now and it is a very good product.

Well that's why I asked, LOL! I have heard in the past that 360 does not always have the "updated" engine like NIS does:

Norton 360 versus Norton Internet Security 2010 - Norton Community

I know this is an old post in the Norton Forum and I was just curious. I have also heard that 360's Backup and performance/optimization tools are "so-so" at best. Again I was just asking I have used Norton products for 10 yrs and am very happy but I never tried 360. In the past I used Norton Save and Restore 2.0 (sorta a version of ghost) for back up on my XP Machines and it got me out of a few jams. I was going to try Ghost 15 on my Win 7 machine but I heard some bad reviews. I ended up installing Acronis True Home Image 2011 but have not had to use it yet to recover from anything. So far I am happy with Acronis it's not to hard to under stand and has a lot of settings you can tweak (almost TO many). I know many here use Acronis so if I have any issues/questions I will come lean on you all :D

Norton 360 v5.0 uses the 2011 engine. ;)

I believe the way it works is, NIS is first to get the updated engine in each annual release. Then Norton 360's new version is released about 3-4 months after NIS, and is included with the same engine.

Ok thanks :D When did v5 come out? So if it was recent I guess that means for the last few months people using 360 had the "older" engine and NIS users had the most updated version? That might be a good this for 360 users use using NIS can be your guinea pigs :sarc:

Right! NAV/NIS gets the newest engine before N360 does. But in terms of aggressive detection rates, there are no differences. :D

ugh.. I've hated Norton for years.. eats up the CPU like a fat kid in a... fat... place?

Back in 2003 yes, now it's 2011. They've stepped up their game.

I agree with you. Three years ago I began to use Norton again and I am very pleased with the progress that they have made both in their software and in their customer services.

I use their Internet Security software and I haven't had one infection or successful intrusion. My only annoyance is with their constant popups telling me that the software is performing a background check. There is no way (that I know of) of turning this feature off. I have notified Norton and suggested that they consider make them optional.

Norton is a bit pricey though which is why I think to give Kaspersky Internet Security a try when this subscription to Norton is finished.

Are you a costco member?

Costco automatically knocks $20 off then they usually have a sale for an addtional $20 off knocking it down to $30 for NIS and it usually comes with another Norton program for free, this time it came with Norton Utilities which I used on one of my XP machines. No it's not free but better than $70 u would pay at Best Buy or elseware

You'll be just fine. Assuming your PC is not infested with worms and rootkits. It's almost as if it isn't even there.

Just installed yesterday and am having problems. After I boot now it is asking for a defrag of my C drive but the defrag doesn't work because of software (Norton's) recently installed.

My xp does not work anymore either. When it tries to boot is blue screens and then tries to boot again.

Everything was running fine until I upgraded yesterday.

I am going to talk with them today to see why this is happened.

My Problems With Norton 360 Version 5

EmailText : I upgraded 3 computers to Version 5. All three run a background scan when idle all the time. The message is Norton 360 Premier Edition is performing a background task: Full System Scan in progress. This keeps the screen saver from coming on.

Dear Dale,

Thank you for contacting Norton support.

I am sorry to know that Norton 360 scans runs continuously when your computer is idle and does not allow the Screensaver to appear.

I understand your concern and I apologize for the inconvenience caused. I will definitely help you with that.

Norton 360 program keeps your computer secure from ongoing threats by automatically running scans on your computer using the Idle Time Scan feature. Idle Time Scan detects the time when you do not use your computer and intelligently runs scans depending on the scan history of your computer. This approach ensures the computer is protected at all times, while leaving the computer's resources available for interactive tasks.

In order to check for the issue, please follow instructions provided below to disable idle time scan, delete the previous scheduled scans and then schedule full system scan at your convenience timing:

Steps to turn off Idle Time Scan:

1. Start Norton 360 program
2. On the top of the Norton interface, click Settings.
3. Click on Antivirus and click 'Scans and Risks' tab
4. Under Computer scans, next to Idle Time Scan, click on the drop-down list and select off.
5. In the Settings window, click Apply.

Steps to delete the scheduled scan:

1. Depending on your version of Windows, do one of the following:

For Windows 7 or Vista: Click the Start button, and then click All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Task Scheduler. If the User Account Control window appears, click Continue.
For Windows XP: Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Scheduled Tasks.

2. Depending on your version of Windows, do one of the following:

For Windows 7 or Vista: Click Task Status. Under Active Tasks, double-click the Norton full system scan entry. In the right pane, under Actions for Selected Item, click Delete.
For Windows XP: Right-click the Norton full system scan entry and then click Delete.

3. In the confirmation dialog box that appears, click Yes.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each entry of Norton full system scan.

5. Close the Windows Task Scheduler.

In order to schedule full system scan at your convenience, please follow instructions provided in the below link:

How to schedule a full system scan in Norton 360 Version 4.0 | Norton Support

Note: If any of the given links is not working by clicking it, please copy and paste the link in the Address bar of your browser.

Once you complete the above steps, please check for the issue and check whether scan runs only at the scheduled timing and not in the background.

If you require additional assistance or still have some concerns, please feel free to contact us. We will be glad to assist you further.

Thanks,

Mustafa Syed

2:39 PM Sanoop: Now we are connected.
2:39 PM Dale: Check the scan log
2:42 PM Dale: May I show you the scan log
2:42 PM Sanoop: Yes please
2:44 PM Dale: This only started happening since I upgraded to v5 and it happens on all 3 machines
2:44 PM Sanoop: Okay
2:44 PM Dale: We have uninstalled also with no effect.
2:47 PM Sanoop: Okay
2:50 PM Sanoop: Please wait for 10 minutes
2:50 PM Dale: I don't want a manual schedule I need on sat evening
2:51 PM Sanoop: Okay
2:59 PM Sanoop: Now it is doing fine
3:00 PM Dale: Well we wouldn't know until it sits idle for at least 30 minutes.
3:01 PM Sanoop: That is Normal thing
3:01 PM Sanoop: Running the idle scan in every 6 minutes is an issue
3:02 PM Sanoop: This is an upgraded version and the idle scan will run when your PC is idle for more than 30 minutes.
3:02 PM Sanoop: It is one of its features
3:02 PM Dale: Your right this problem only started with v5 not v3
3:03 PM Dale: It should not run a full system scan every 6 minutes like its doing. The hard derives stay on non stop which is not good.
3:04 PM Sanoop: It will not full scan in every 6 minutes
3:04 PM Sanoop: That has been fixed now
3:05 PM Dale: I showed you the log and it does
3:05 PM Sanoop: Now that’s fixed
3:05 PM Dale: It should not do this at all.
3:06 PM Sanoop: It happened before you contacted me
3:06 PM Sanoop: Now your product will not run full scan in every 6 minutes
3:06 PM Dale: Yes I have incident numbers if you need them
3:07 PM Dale I guess I’m missing something here. By putting it to manual is this the fix.
3:07 PM Sanoop: Please understand that your issue that is running full scan in every 6 minutes is fixed
3:07 PM Sanoop: Do you understand that?
3:09 PM Dale: Is putting it to manual the fix??? Number 505198987 and 505199421
3:16 PM Dale: Are you there?
3:17 PM Sanoop: Yes, I am here
3:18 PM Dale: Thank You
3:18 PM Sanoop: Now please check the security history.
3:18 PM Sanoop: Idle time scan was not ran.
3:19 PM Dale: It won't run until we're off of it. Is putting it to manual the answer???
3:20 PM Sanoop: Yes
3:22 PM Dale: This is not a good fixed I need to run this in auto mode in the evening. V3 didn't have this problem only in V5. Can I get a transcript of this chat emailed to me?

Nikhil>
Yes.
Mr. Dale >
It’s not really running a full scan but it's stuck in a loop
Mr. Dale >
This didn't do anything past 5:00 because the machine was shut down
Mr. Dale >
This is not what I wanted to do what I want to do is auto mode.
Nikhil>
Okay. Please check if the issue resolved after selecting it as automatic.
Mr. Dale >
This is not what I need to do. I think it’s time to go back to v3 until v5 is fixed
