I have a very peculiar problem here.

I have a Dell XPS 15 laptop, have been using it for more than an year now. I have a blueray combo CD drive in my system.
Specs: HL-DT-ST DVDRWBD CT30N

Here is the issue - I am not able to open DVDs on my system, not all. The peculiarity is, I am able to open bootable DVDs, but not normal data DVDs.

Here is what all I tried:
1. Reinstalled the driver - Did not work
2. Reformated my system - Didnt work
3. Checked for the "upperfiler/lowerfilter' registry fixes - Didnot work
4. Did the Microsoft online 'Fixit' fix - Didnot work

Has anyone faced a similar issue before wherein you were able to open a bootable DVD, but not a normal DVD? Please help!

Cheers

What happens when you right click on the DVD in Computer? What is the default (bold) entry?

What is Control Panel, Default Programs, Change Autoplay Settings set to?

Is there anything in Control Panel, Default Programs, Change Autoplay Settings for blueray?

Also, what is on the DVDs? Were they finalized? Where were they created?

The optical drive is really a composite device with drivers for CD, DVD and Blu-ray

See if there are any drivers offered in the optional section of Windows Update.

If not check Dell. I know you said you updated the driver, there's another piece ... I've seen this before, just can't recall the fix.

Please add your SF Systems Specs by following this tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html
  • In the System Manufacturer/Model Number field, manually type Desktop or Laptop adding it to the information already in the field.
  • Specify Custom Build as the manufacturer if it is not an OEM machine.
  • The tool does not fill in this information but it is very important if someone has to research drivers or hardware for your machine.
Log on to Sevenforums (SF) and let the tool fill in you System specs on your SF profile.

Full instructions are in the tutorial. It's a simple process and it makes that information readily available on your posts. You don't have to retype the information in any thread.

Click here to view your system specs on SevenForums.

Click on My System Specs in the lower left of any post by any member to see what is presented about their machine.

Thanks

You could try the Dell forum: HL-DT-ST DVDRWBD CA30N - fail

What's about the Dell firmware? It can be needed because firmwares are updating the list of compatible medias to be played.

You could also ask at the Rpc1.org community forums
