Not administrator

I have Windows 7 Home premium set up with myself as only user as administrator. Despite this, several operations throw up error message "Administrator only". I have checked all permissions and tried disabling UAC, but nothing helps.

I believe that you want to modify system files and you can't access them? Am I correct?

No, it is worse than that! For example, I can use Windows Update OK, but when I click on "Update other Microsoft products", the Administrator only message comes up. Certain other system functions are barred as well.

Are you running an upgrade or a clean install? What have you done to your system before the problem happened?

Clean installation on new computer, installation carried out by Dell. Settings transferred from old XP machine. Problem from start.

Tried those earlier. Seems Ok, but doesn't actually work. I think it is more basic than individual programmes.
