Not Getting All Channels on WMC

Hi -

Upfront, I'm a newbie to WMC TV. So that said....

I set it up this afternoon and scanned for analog and digital QAM stations. It only brought in channels 1-100, plus some "subchannels" which I don't understand: e.g., 15, 15.3 & 15.4; 11 channel 16s, some of which look the same.

We don't have a huge cable package, but there are about 20 channels over 100 we get (100-120) that includes the Military Channel, which I want, plus about 10 movie channels (300-310).

Any thoughts on how - or if - I can get all of the channels?

Thanks.

Generally, you will never get any cable stations over QAM except your local over the air TV stations. The rest of your cable is encrypted. The locals are only unencrypted because the FCC makes the cable company do that, and beware, they really can circumvent the intent by supplying you with only SD versions of your local stations if they want.

This is referring to a setup WITHOUT a smartcard (or whatever it's called).

Your off to a great start. Media Center is simply the best way to watch TV.
Just answer these few questions so I can help you.

Do you know what TV tuner model you are using?
Before you set up media center were you using a cable box to receive channels?

If your wanting to get premium you will need a digital cable card Tuner. I use one by a company called Ceton. It's amazing, I can watch and record 4 channels of HD without having to pay for a cable box or DVR. Multi-Stream Tuner Cards by Ceton

Just answer my two questions and I can get started helping you set everything up.

They are called cable cards. You rent them for a couple bucks a month from your cable provider and you can access premium channels except movies on demand and other 2-way cable services.
