Notebook Randomly Shutting Off

Hi,

I was just surfing the net when the notebook shut off and restarted randomly.

I checked in the event viewer and it said this:

Critical: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Try running Prime95; in particular, the Large FFTs test: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/100352-cpu-stress-test-prime95.html

If the crashes persist, upload a BSOD report.

Hi,

I am not getting any BSOD's, but it is just shutting off by itself randomly.

Ok, I will do a stress test with Prime95, but is it necessary to run it for 12 hours straight? If so, can I use the notebook during the stress test?

You can try to use the notebook, although you may find it too slow to do much with.

Perhaps the full system report generated by that BSOD program will contain enough info to help us.

Another cause could be your fan not cooling the cpu. You could try blowing out the vents to
make sure that they are not clogged up. Also that there is plenty of room for input air to your
fans.

Hi,

Jonathan_King - Ok, I won't use the notebook during the Prime95 test. One question. Should I upload the BSOD report first then do the Prime95 test or vice versa?

Richnrockville - I intend soon to undervolt the notebook, as well as clean the vents and fans and stuff, and hopefully even apply some Arctic Silver 5. But right now, I am using a laptop cooler to cool the notebook.

Why don't you plan on doing the test first? If it crashes, the report may pick up some additional clues.

Plus, I'm about to leave for work, so I won't be able to do anything with the report for a while.

That won't matter I guess, since the Test will take 12 hours and your work would probably take less than 10 hours. Sorry I am bothering you by the way.

You need to run Prime95 for a few hours I'd say, though more does not hurt.

Hi,

I ran the Prime95 Large FFT test before I was about to go to bed. After 5 minutes of preparing myself for bed (bathroom, brush teeth), the notebook shutdown. I noticed the fans and CPU was going on mad like crazy.

Later on today, I checked the Event Viewer and I see this:

That means your laptop overheated, if you don't already know. Now Prime95 (especially the Large FFTs test) will cause your chips to heat up much more than normal, but still, it shouldn't be overheating.

Try taking a can of compressed air, and blowing out the air vents to clean out the dust.

Undervolting
Cleaning the inside's of the notebook
Arctic Silver 5??
Changing the fan??

Also, is there a need or would it help if I replaced the internal fans for the notebook?

Undervolting may be detrimental to the stability of your laptop, and would be especially ironic given the nature of the original crashes. A major cause of Kernel Power Error 41 cases is insufficient or spotty power to the CPU, motherboard, and RAM. Undervolting is giving the CPU less power; unless you also decrease the power demand, you may create more problems for yourself.

In order to decrease the power demand, you would need to slow down the entire clock, which may very well decrease performance. It will decrease heat, however.

If you are determined to undervolt, be sure to go the whole way and underclock as well.

Decreasing the internal fans may help if the current ones are failing; it would also help if your fan blades are now covered with dust. You can also clean off the dust with compressed air; a slightly cheaper solution.
