Notebook Text Unreadable

Hi, I am having a problem with some readme files. This is what I get, the whole page is filled with..... %5^fêjf½WKšgq›H3_ã“©uøÊ°2&Uç€GÖ/M ÇójÈ
I have tried using other systems like notepad2 and EditPadLite but the same problem occurs. Any advice will be most welcome.

Double click the readme file you are looking at and see if opens in a browser window. It may be an HTML file rather than a TXT.

What is the filetype of that file?

Do you have your folder options set to "hide extensions for known file types." If so, untick it where you can see the filetype and check and see what it says for the readme file you're looking for.

In Windows Explorer, click "Tools", then "Folder Options", then "View." See that the sentence "Hide extensions for known file types" is clear, or checked.

Sorry, didn't quite get that last bit. I found the "hide extensions for known file types." and unticked it.

It's a PDF file!

Okay. It needs to have Adobe Reader, or Foxit, Nitro, or something similar to read PDF files to open it. Foxit is a choice of lots of people, but you can Google all and see which you would prefer.

Cato is right. You need a PDF reader. I would recomeend Foxit Foxit Software - Foxit Reader for Windows - Adobe is a pain. Stay away from this one.

Don't mean to intrude since the OP's question is clearly resolved, but may I ask what's wrong with Adobe? Granted, I am using the Acrobat Pro, not the Reader (and frankly, I would not change it for anything), so basically since it's been a long time since I last had the Reader installed on my machine, I am curious what's the problem with it? On various other machines (when I visit other places) it seems to be doing its job just fine.

I used Adobe in the "old days" It is big, bulky and they constantly bother you with updates. Foxit is a lot lighter, swifter and has more function than the standad Adobe.

Adobe will read PDF files OK. But sometimes it can be a pain. Foxit does the job quietly and never bothers you.

Yeah, but that is the problem with many of those free programs. That is how they finance themselves - fair deal. You just have to untick the boxes. And if you forget, toolbars are easy to uninstall.
