I copied Notepad from C:\Windows\system32\notepad.exe to my desktop and it won't launch from the new location. It launches just fine from the Start Menu (that points to the original location). I also tried taking the copy from C:\Windows\notepad.exe but that won't launch, either.

I'd think that something as simple as Notepad would launch wherever it's sitting. For what it's worth, there are two user profiles on here and I have the UAC turned all the way down.

I'm doing this because the other user plans to install Notepad++, which will overwrite Notepad, and I'd really like to hold on to it.

Thanks,
raen

Notepadd++ will not overwrite notepad!!!

Copying Notepad from it's default directory will not work, because it needs to point to C:\Windows\system32\

Just install notepad++ it will not overwrite the default one. Never does!

You don't want to COPY notepad.exe.
You should create a shortcut to it.

Right mouse click on Notepad.exe and drag it to the desktop.
Let go of the Right mouse button, and then left click "Create shortcuts here".

You can copy that shortcut to wherever else you want to.
