A few weeks ago I changed the file association for .html files to open with Notepad (instead of IE) and since then I have noticed that often when I perform a Save As action in Notepad (on an .html file) and then press the Enter key (as opposed to the Save button) Notepad "stops working" and generates the following message:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

Note that I used a program called Default Programs Editor to make the change. Has anyone seen anything like this? Is there a way to reinstall Notepad independently? In every other way Notepad works fine.

PS: As for the reason I used a third party app to change the default program, I tried to do it "normally" but it wasn't sticking. But I realized after that the reason it wasn't sticking is because that change somehow prompted IE to think it wasn't the default browser, and when the message came out asking me if I wanted to make IE the default browser, it undid the file association to Notepad. I only realized this after the fact.

Thank you!

Thank you, that looks very interesting. I had another idea shortly after the post, I used the same third party app that I used to initially make the changes (Default Programs Editor) to change them back, in essence by copying all the entries for the .htm extension to the .html extension. I'll see how that works out. If there are still problems, I will follow the link above.

Happened again, my fix didn't stick. I tried your suggestion and clicked on registry entry to restore file associations for .html, but to no avail. The peculiar thing is that there are strange ways to make the error go away (sometimes anyway). For example, just now I was working on A.html. When I tried to save it as B.html, Notepad crashed. If I reopen A.html and try to save it as B.html the same thing happens (and will continue happening). I tried your suggestion, then repeated the process, still the same result. Then I tried opening C.html and was able to save it as D.html. After that point I am able to open A.html and save it as B.html. Even when pressing the Enter key (as opposed to the Save button) which seems to be what crashes Notepad. So far so good again. Strange...

Well, the next step would be to see if running a sfc /scannow command may be able to fix any possible corrupted system files that may be at fault.

If this still does not help, then you could do a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before this happened to undo it.

If it's still a no go, then as a test create a new administrator account to see how it works while logged in the new account.

I have had the problem from time to time. I am an experimenter so, in my case, I found restoring an earlier (Acronis) image did the trick. Othet than that I failed on all counts to get notepad working again.
In the end, I installed EditPad lite, which is, in any case, a superior program. Works like a charm!

But, to the point, I suspected the original fault has something to do with the use of Ccleaner. Since the problem started, I have twice upgraded Ccleaner to a later version and (I think!) the problem has gone away.

Yeah, I have Ccleaner installed as well as Advanced System Care 4. I'm always afraid to press enter when they find registry entries that they suggest deleting. I dunno, you'd think they have no problem with a straightforward program like Notepad. Won't point the finger at these just yet as I do a lot of experimenting and tweaking myself, but I'll keep them in mind as possible culprits... I have Notepad++ installed which is also really great-looking, I'm such a creature of habit though, it's hard to break the habit of my old friend Notepad.
