Hi,

I have a serious error on a laptop that my friend gave me, she is a college professor and gave me her laptop to fix it but i have absolutely no idea what to do.

Laptop just seem to randomly stop working:
-Right click menu wont open no matter where or on what i click (left click works but wont run anything)
-Cant start anything, Contrpl panel, task manager, CMD, anti virus ... anything (only thing i can do is shut down)

She says this problem started few days ago, i've scanned for viruses but apart from some minor usual problems nothing major was detected.

I need help as to what could be causing this.

Edit: forgot to write this: problem appears random, sometimes laptop works fine sometimes this happens, i have not noticed any patterns when it appears (once i clicked my computer and bam, other time i ran Ad-aware and bam........ seems completely random)

First we need to see if it's hardware or software issue.

boot into safe mode and see if it behaves the same way.
If it does:
-Do hardware test. Check memory first using memtest86+ then hard drive
If it doesn't:

-Log on with a different windows profile. See if it is specific to her profile only.
-If it is not profile specific, then you need to disable third party services and startup programs to see what is the primary culprit.

I see this in post #1.

What was the reason the professor gave the laptop to you if you no idea what to do?
----
Can you use the computer as administrator?
Do you have all needed passwords?
Have you ever cleaned out the dust bunnies out of any laptop before?

Not being able to use Right click does make things more difficult.

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

You can monitor the temperature of various things to see if that is the cause of the lockup. There are several programs that can do this, maybe speccy will be enough to leave up/running/visible. When it freezes, look at the temps in that screen.

You could also try a clean boot: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ation-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html

Thank you for your welcome, i have tried a clean boot asap, but it did not solve the problem.

You could try a sfc/scannow to check for corrupted systems files : http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

Might be worth a try.

Did this scan, also scanned with various AV programs but nothing serious came up, also did windows repair but it did not fix it

Not being able to use Right click does make things more difficult.

1: She is less versed in technical matters and I for one can pretty much deal with any problem in windows PC/Laptops, but i have never seen this kind of ..... problem, and all and every thing that i tried so far point that everything is working fine.

2:i have all passwords and all rights as admin, i also know how to take any laptop apart down to last screw and put it back together

3: i have and IT college diploma and have been tinkering with pc's since '92 or '93 i think

To put it short this is first time that i have no idea how to deal with a problem:
So far all scans, tests and benchmarks have returned nothing, everything seems to work fine but sometimes when i turn on laptop you cant right click, and you cant run anything, all you can do is open start menu and shut down and after that problem is most often gone when you start it up again, but sometimes it sticks and you cant use laptop for several hours or whole day.

I cant say if it is a hardware problem since everything seems to work perfectly, laptop is well maintained. I've decided to reinstall windows but i won't install one that came with laptop, i got my hands on a second hand from a friend and will install it to see if problem persists with a different version of windows
