Now I'm really confused about Product ID vs Product Key

A lot of posters on here have been identifying software as "counterfeit" because of the 3 digit code in Product ID. Why? What difference does it make where you got the WIN 7 download as long as you have a valid product key? I believe I installed my WIN 7 Pro from a ISO image on the Microsoft public website in July 2018. What Product ID would that be?

This doesn't make sense.

Hi Wjell,

The product key is a licence to run W7, the Iso download in reality has no "owner"

The product keys and product ID's are linked via the version of W7 and those 3 digits
Downloads from MS which require a product key are only partially validated.
Full validation is only performed after 3 months or if KB971033 is installed and quarterly therafter
(partial validation actually occurs every time you start-up)

The 3 digit code tells MS what the source of the product key is
(i have a list of these which includes OEM/Retail/Volume and others)
Product keys fall into 3 catagories OEM installed/Volume (the same key used on multiple install) and Unique like those on a COA sticker or Retailed CD's packaging
MSDN keys are a bit of a hybrid as they show as Retail but ARE NOT allowed to be sold
(these keys WERE only sold by MS)

The above is a beginners guide but is NOT comprehensive

Here is the reason for my confusion. I used Slmgr.vbs /cpky to remove the "non genuine" key. I then used Slmgr.vbs /rearm to reset the clock while I try to figure this out.

The Computer Properties screen still shows a Product ID but no Product Key. ??? AND the diag shows the following:

I have a key that was on a Dell laptop before it got baptized with a cup of tea. But Windows does not think it is genuine now either, but it was working OK on the Dell until December 2018. I don't think that key is an OEM key because it worked fine after I switched out the motherboard. So what does this all mean?

Hi wjell

the UPK action removes the product key totally
cpky only removes it from the registry
rearm looks at the registry for the key and because of this its put into a confused state,

Partial Product Key: KQPYW (this is a default)
License Status: Initial grace period

<PKey>*****-*****-*****-*****-BBBBB (usuall reported if a MAK key is in use)

please run this command
slmgr /rilc
(re-installs system license files)

slmgr was really introduced for Volume licence clients, however its been picked up by almost everyone, to reset certain licence components and operations.

As for the Dell product key
What version is it for home/Pro??
default OEM keys which will show as non-genuine on another comp

HomePremium 6RBBT-F8VPQ-QCPVQ-KHRB8-RMV82

Professional 32KD2-K9CTF-M3DJT-4J3WC-733WD

Would you install it on your comp and run the tool

Interesting... I used keyfinder to pull the key off the hard drive of the dead Dell drive hooked up to my computer and got the KQPYW, but I got the whole key. I dunno. Maybe I'll try that again. I'm going through all my key text files seeing what I have from over the years.

One of them is an OEM key ending in 733WD. Probably is the generic Dell key. Unfortunately, I'm looking for a key to install on a HP and that Dell key shouldn't work.

The HP had windows 8 on it but I burned it with WIN 7 Pro and bought a "genuine" key off of eBay. Then it became not so genuine this month.

I have one more untested key to try from 2009. I don't remember anything about it, but it says WIN7. Who knows?

If I run the UPK will it end my grace period? I'd like to have some time in order to find a LEGITIMATE WIN 7 Pro Full Version at a reasonable price to end all my problems. But I also would like to find a unicorn too.

Thanks for all your help and sharing your knowledge. Knowledge is a wonderful thing.

Also, on the key that was OK and then wasn't genuine this month that I bought on eBay in December. I called Microsoft support and they said that key was "blocked".

Hi

As you said knowledge is a wonderful thing, which brings me nicely to this

The HP that had W8 on it, was it by any chance Pro, many had the option to "downgrade to W7" for free:-)
Go to the homepage for your model it should tell you
Notes
the Mgadiag does NOT show evidence of W8 being present or installed, it has a specific line beginning MSDM
Is the original HP recovery option available??

As for your 2009 key, google it (DO NOT POST IT), see if you get any hits 0 = good, but doesnt guarentee
Win7 What version??

As for UPK, if you run it it will remove the current key, and put the machine into a 30 day grace period, this can then be extended by a further 60 days by using slmgr /rearm

did you run the RLIC command

As for the MSDN key not surprised by the response from the MS rep, they (MS) are gradually removing/blocking these keys, especially if multiple instances appear on thier validation servers
(the sellers typically sell the same key more than once give a max 60 guarentee, unfortunately unless its previously been blocked, COMPLETE validation does not occur until day 90,they also advise using slmg /rearm as an excuse if its picked up earlier, and uninstalling KB971033.

Living off the 30 day grace period until I either find my Win 8 Pro key or a legitimate Win 7 Pro key. Kinda hard to believe that with less than year left on extended support that the full Retail media and keys are so expensive.
