I've been using my laptop all day perfectly fine, closed the lid and set it aside for a few hours and it came back saying it recovered from a crash. I checked with Bluescreenview and it was a driver power state failure linked to ntoskrnl.exe. Beyond that I'm clueless, so any help is appreciated

Hi, thanks for the info.

Your logs show a driver is causing an inconsistent power state:

The i8042prt.sys is a system function driver found in Windows for PS/2-style keyboard and mouse devices.
In your case it is related to your Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad, which is failing:

Code:
Faulting Driver: [COLOR=red]SynTP.sys[/COLOR]

Download and Update to latest version: :ar: Drivers | Synaptics

Also your graphics driver is causing issues:

Code:
Faulting Driver: [COLOR=red]nvlddmkm.sys[/COLOR]
Refers to: Geforce GT 540M Nvidia Graphics Driver

Looks like you have recently updated your graphics driver: nvlddmkm.sys Fri Jun 21 10:06:16 2013

Download and update to the 314.22 stable driver: :ar: Drivers | GeForce

Post back any progress.

No problem. :)

The Nvidia driver you have installed is known to be buggy and has cause many crashes
and game issues with users lately, so I suspect you may crash again.

To Downgrade your driver ;):

1. Download and install :ar: Driver Fusion.
2. Reboot the computer in :ar: Advanced Boot Options, safe mode.
3. Search Driver Fusion in your start menu, and remove all components of your nVidia display driver.
4. If it says the free version of Driver Fusion cannot remove all the elements, stop there and follow:
:ar: Drivers - Clean Left over Files after Uninstalling
5. Boot normally now. Then install the :ar: 314.22 driver. Reboot.

cheers

DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE (9f)

As you have updated the driver and it is crashing again, try the driver from Dell:

Under "Input - Driver" (Halfway down page) Version 15.2.6.0

Website: :ar: ftp://ftp.dell.com/Pages/Drivers/xps-l502x.html

Also run SFC to check the integrity of all Windows 7 system files:
  • Click on Start > Type in search cmd
Right-click cmd after results are displayed and Run as Administrator
Type SFC /scannow at the prompt
(Note: There is a space between SFC and /scannow)
:ar: SFC Tutorial

   Note
Select option two. If any problems are found, run the scan 3 times and immediately
reboot the computer after each scan.

Free the startup:

Click on the Start button.
Type “msconfig"(without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
Select the “Startup” tab.
Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
Apply > OK
Click the "Services" tab, click the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box, then click Disable All.
Click OK, then restart the computer.

cheers

Dave
