ntuser.dat deleted

is there any way of getting back this ntuser.dat that has been deleted?Im using the account's ntuser.dat for it at the moment but the setting wasnt right. Lot of errors occur.

Several questions. How did you delete it, and did you empty the recycle bin? Is it on an internal drive?

Do you have a backup? System specs on the computer?

If that certain sector of the drive hasnt be re-written, you can recover it.

Short of using something like TestDisk... if the file can not be found and recovered...
the answer is no.

Probably not as this is part of the profile. You can create a new user, which will create a new profile, then transfer the data (my documents, desktop, favorites) to the new profile and delete the old one.

Actually, I just thought of something....
There might me an ntuser.dat.bak or something in the root of that profile. If there is, you might be able to rename that back to ntuser.dat and fix the issue. Although it may create other issues.

Also, this may or may not work for Windows Vista/7 but you can try it

Corrupt Hive

Some explanations that I have found regarding the ntuser.dat file.....

1. During the logon process, your workstation loads the HKU hive and then
applies the changes in the NTUSER.dat to that to make the HKCU hive that
the profile uses as its working copy. Changes that you make to the HKCU
will be saved in the NTUSER.dat and will affect just that user. Changes
made to HKU will affect all users logging into that machine.

I had similar problem, here is how I could solve it :

Logged into another admin account
Right click on the userprofile folder in C:/Users/ of the user account whose ntuser.dat has been deleted.
Click "Restore Previous Version" from the right click menu.
Of all the versions displayed, double click open the latest one which has the original ntuser.dat
copy the ntuser.dat to another folder and replaced it back in the current version of the userprofile.
