Here are a few number based puzzles for you.

Counting my thumbs as fingers, I have 11 fingers. How did I work that out?

4 - 1 = 5

11 / 2 = 6

10 + 1 = 9

4 * 2 = 9

12 / 2 = 7 (and 7 * 2 = 12)

Thats an easy one ... you lost one to a dwarf maiden during a particularly nice evening at the local pub....

Since I don't get that one, I'll contribue a different puzzle:

a = 1
b = 1
a = a
a = b
ab = a^2
ab - b^2 = a^2 - b^2
b(a - b) = (a + b)(a - b)
b = (a + b)
1 = 1 + 1
1 = 2 <--- eh?

Where's the logic flaw?

A bucket has a hole in it. The water flows out of that hole at a rate of 2 gallons per minute. How big is the hole?

US gals or Imperial gals ??

2 gals / min US = 3.78533 Liters/Minute * 2. (gas fitting stats).
Calculate cylindrical vol from a minutes flow and you should get the hole size.

(Vol = π*r**2*h) you can do the maths.
While you have 2 variables r (radius) and h height only ONE set of values will fit the equation.

For US measurements the hole size should be around 1/2 inch - any old gas fitter / Engineer will tell you that this size pipe will sustain a flow of around 2.2 US gals / min -- near enough the right answer. So consider your hole as the "pipe outlet".


(I'm cheating here - I sometimes to some gas work for neighbours -- I.T doesn't pay anything like it used to anymore and I can get more money spending Sunday repairing a "Bog" or a gas boiler than 3 days of stupid management screaming in an I.T office).

I still get only 10, and I've been trying for hours - in both directions.

I imagine your polydactyly is a positive mutation as far as typing is concerned? Should give you that evolutionary "edge" in the eyes of the modern woman

It doesn't matter how big the hole is. The hole is actually the missing bottom of the bucket. So, in effect, the bucket is a tube. In order to get water flowing out at 2 gallons a minute, then water needs to be flowing in at the same rate. This condition will be met so long as the diameter of the bucket is equal to or greater than that of the pipe supplying the water.
