Number of characters in Word text.

Word shows the number of words in the text on the state bar at the bottom. Can it be adjusted to show the number of characters? Thank you very much in advance.

I don't know if you can change the word count to character count in the Status Bar, but see if this helps.

Select the text you want the character count for (Select All for the entire doc).
Click on the Word Count in the Status Bar.

It pops up this info in Word 2010:

Just an addition to David's practical tip: at least on Word 2010 and 2013 you don't have to select all if you want to see the stats of entire document. Whole document content is the default setting so simply clicking the word count shows the stats of the complete document, whereas selecting part of the document and clicking word count shows stats for the selected part.
