Hello all,
The problem started a few weeks ago on my wife's Lenovo Ideapad Y550 with Windows Home Premium 32 bit. We noticed that at logon the computer said that the password was in error. I checked Caps and Num locks and still got the error. So I created a password reset flash drive. When I go to the password reset screen and type in the 'hint' field, the the numbers 0123456789 repeat continually regardless of which alphabet or number key is hit.
I can reset the computer and it'll fix itself. Then I can logon.
Once it has done this while typing in quicken. I clicked on a new window and back again and the keyboard worked fine.
Things I've tried:
1. Update the driver: for some reason under keyboard properties (in admin acct.) update driver button is greyed out and cannot be selected.
2. I adjusted the language settings to enforce English at the welcome screen.
3. virus scan: I have a spy sweeper, firewall, and virus scan installed and they come up clean.

My wife said she got a message about the keyboard before this started but didn't remember what it said.

Please advise,
Thank you

i hope the driver file of the keyboard is corrupted by some means...., don't go for update...

go to device manager n find keyboard, just right click on it and give uninstall. nw remove the keyboard from its port and plug it and restart your system....
windows wil detect your keyboard and it ll install the driver automatically... it shuld work fine.. ( I'm assuming there is no issues with your keyboard (i.e..) no hardware issues)

I apologize. I should have specifically mentioned that it is a laptop. There is no port. If I uninstall the driver, will it detect the built-in keyboard if I restart?

Thanks,

@ karlsnooks: Yes I can login after a restart or with face recognition software.

I'll try re-installing the drivers and post what happens.

when i had problems with random numbers at login (caused by my fingerprint scanner) i just select the on screen keyboard and login that way, not a solution to your problem, but definately a work around?

Still not working...

I reinstalled the drivers.
I still get this problem. It's an inconvenience more than anything.
I can use the on-screen keyboard and login. Then it stops.
Why would I only have problems at the login screen?
It doesn't make sense to me.

Thanks for your help.

I've found the logon software to be extremely sensitive. If my fingers linger on a key, then log on fails. If logon typing is too snappy, then log on fails.

I sympathize with you but I've learned to be methodical but rapid, although not with lightning speed, when logging in.

I agree that this is a "feature" (also known as bug) of WIN 7.

the problem isnt just on the login screen, I have the same issue with my ideapad y560 except it does it in random programs i use, one of which has a chat function that i can only type 0-9 in, another is a popular game called Starcraft II, where all of the keys act as numbers 0-9, and lastly it has done it in another game i have called Minecraft. All of the instances of this bug are not program related, because all of them have some other function in the game or program that allows me to use the keyboard regularly.

Yes, I also cannot use Starcraft II or this program called Web assign. I have found that if you hold control while typing it works. I have tried rebooting my computer. Reinstalling my keyboard drivers. This is definitely a problem with only Lenovo's. It must not be a virus. I would think it has to be hardware, but this should be a free fix w/o warranty because we all have the same problem.

I noted this problem didn't exist if I started my computer in safe mode. Both Internet Explorer and Firefox URL address fields worked fine. But if I started my computer in normal mode, typing letters in the URL field for either browser would result in a counting sequence of numeric digits. So, I began removing startup programs one by one (by unchecking via Control Panel/System and Security/Administrative Tools/System Configuration Startup tab). When I unchecked the following (and rebooted), the problem went away:

Startup Item: GID Desktop Application

Command:C:\Program Files\SFT\GuardedID\gidd.exe /s
