i have problems with this display driver - stops responding all the time (and has recovered so far) but this is a brand new computer!
any suggestions for fixing it?

You are getting a TDR error related to your Nvidia Geforce card

Common issues that can cause a TDR:
- Bad memory
- Insufficient/problematic PSU
- Corrupt driver install
- Overheating
- Unstable overclocks (GPU or CPU)
- Incorrect MB voltages (generally NB/SB)
- Faulty graphics card

Things to check first:

- Run memtest (memtest.org). This should complete with NO errors.
- Check your PSU ratings. Is it providing enough power, and most importantly enough Amps on the 12V rail.
- Check temperatures. Its important you check these at load, which is generally when a TDR event will occur. Cleaning your system of dust can help temperatures significantly. Common sense will normally tell you if something is too hot, but if you aren't sure, the information is generally available online.
- Test with stock clocks. This includes memory, CPU and GPU (even factory OC'd cards). Best to try each separately so you can be sure if one solves the issue.
- Try graphics card/cards in another computer if you can.

Nvidia driver problems

Now, you don't have to listen to me, but from my experience you will continue to have driver issues with your video. It is so frustrating when each iteration of driver produces the same result.

I feel so strongly that when I went out to buy a laptop one of the main requirements was video, any other video, than Nvidia. I'm running an ATI now and haven't had one video-related issue.

All you Nvidia fans, please don't flame. This is just one person's opinion.

i have a hard time believing this is a driver issue..

i bought an i7 dell 3 months ago, had this problem, they replaced graphic card, didnt fix it, they replaced MB, didnt fix it, replaced HD, didnt fix it, replaced ALL 3 together, it got fixed - and i used the same driver that dell provided.

I bought a new i7 computer, SAME EXACT thing as the first one, cuz i needed a 2nd one now.. AGAIN SAME ISSUE, i was so pissed off, told them to come and change ALL 3 parts right away, they did it, but i still have the problem.. which is why im on these forums again.

this is ridiculous.

i have tried hardware change and driver change and its not fixing it.. what do i do? return the computer?
ims cared if i keep it, something goes wrong in 6 months, and since i got no warranty.. i'll get shafted?

Your RAM might be faulty or incorrectly configured (timings or voltages)

I would return them both now. With certain models, Dell has established a record of replacing hardware they expect to fail with more defective hardware, then blaming the customer.

This doesn't apply to everything Dell makes. I'm using a 4 year old Latitude D620 ATM that has never had any problems or needed anything but more memory and a bigger HDD, both of which I installed myself. However, the next higher model#, the D630 shipped with faulty nVidea chipsets, which they continued to sell long after they became aware the graphics cards were faulty

that is now scary.. i cant return the first computer (though the first computer doesnt have the issue anymore they fixed it by replacing graphic card, hd and mother board)... cuz its been like 5 months since i bought it...

the 2nd comp i bought very recently so maybe i can return that..

but tell me, what computer should i get??? i want a computer as strong as the i7 vostro 430 from dell... i dont want HP i dun want these bullshit brands .. up until these two last computers dell was flawless for us, now these two killed the record..

i need the comp for heavy photoshop use.. corel use.. i know i can build my own computer, but never done it and dont have the time if stuff goes wrong during the process..

In general, I like Dell and HP computers (excepting anything labeled compaq), but the companies that make them kind of s*ck. When they work, they usually work very well, and when they don't it's job security, cause I see more out of warranty Dells and Compaqs in my shop than all other brands combined, almost always the same models over and over.

If I had to make a recommendation, find a local shop that has custom built systems, and pick the one connected to the biggest monitor. That's probably the best one in the shop, the builder's current favorite, and will probably last longer than most prebuilt systems.. Having a local computer guru build a system for you if you don't have the time to do it yourself, while more expensive, is almost always a better option than ordering a machine from almost any other major manufacturer or worse, buying one off the shelf at Best Buy. For one, customer support with most manufacturers is almost a farce. Any computer builder who's actually any good will back up their work with a guarantee against parts failure for a lot more than the standard 1 year warranty..
